When people lose part of identity, they feel like a stranger, and feel like they don't even know themselves anymore.

I think Stella chooses to stay with Stanley even after he hurts her because she felt trapped, or thought that it was normal. I think people today struggle less to talk about their emotions openly. Mental health is no longer much of a taboo in today's society. When someone keeps too many feelings inside for too long, it will eventually break a person and cause them to lash out at others or themselves.
