The citizens were hungry and unpleasant with their current life situation, while Philip II was king of the country along with Portugal. As Spain faced their own issues, the Atlantic Slave Trade had begun, and in the same year the NS de la Concepción ship set sail towards Senegambi. The ship was Miguel Munoz, and made a total of 16 voyages, taking the total of 2,648 enslaved Africans through the ship's career.

Spain's current GPD is 36,211.

In 1773, the ship Aventurier sailed towards Bight of Benin, being commanded by Jean Shaghnessy Hélie. During the ship's career 889 enslaved people were taken.


Currently the GPD for this country is 42,321.

They purchased slaves here and brought them to Martinique. The coastal limits of the Bight of Benin have also been a matter of conflict. "Even though Europeans had long mapped the coastal geography of West Africa by the early eighteenth century, they still understood very little about the interior by 1780"  (Lovejoy 446). This meant the staff and the captain had little understanding of the geographics of this coast.

For example, "If a slave attempted to run away, the punishment was to have a leg amputated or – if forgiven by the master – be given 150 lashes and lose one ear." (Virgin Island History). Around 50 plantations and sugar cane fields were destroyed due to the revolt, as well as the death of several European settlers.  However, "With assistance from French troops from Martinique, there was a manhunt for the rebels, and by May 1734 the revolt was put down. Most rebels were killed during the fighting or committed collective suicide." (Virgin Island History).

In 1821, the ship Minerva, with its captain being Manoel Pereira dos Santos sailed to Luanda (Angola), the ship made a total of 47 voyages.

Therefore, to prevent the intrusion of foreign imperial powers and "to figure out the amount of tax that could be extracted from the population under effective or nominal Portuguese rule, Rodrigo de Sousa decided not only to revive census taking in Angola, but turn the production of demographic data there into an operation. This led to a third enumeration in Luanda. " (Lovejoy 8). This all meant that , "from the year  1798 to the end of 1832, at lea censuses are known to have been taken of the inhabitants of Luanda" (Lovejoy  9).

Angola's GPD is now 6,110.

During that time period the Revolução do Porto was happening, an economic and political crisis the country was facing due to the transfer of the Portuguese court. Once the enslaved people arrived in Bahia they would be sent in their vast majority to sugar plantations in the fertile Recôncavo region.

"With the Europeans also came foreign diseases, and the native people--once they had been subjugated and made to work the fields--died off in alarming numbers." (Latimes 1) Therefore, Africans were brought to replace them, once they arrived they would primarily work in sugar cane plantations.

The year of 1574 was a crucial period for the expansion and development of the church, in this year until the end of the sixteenth century the promulgation of the Ordenanza del Patronazgo occurred. Once the slaves arrived in New Spain they would work in plantations, ranches or mining areas of the viceroyalty hence their physical consistency being ideal for working in warm areas. 

In modern days, the GPD for Mexico is 17,852.

Their work would consist in  road building, plantation work and domestic service. In case they didn't obey, enslaved people would deal with severe consequences, for minor incidents whipping was a common practice as a form of punishment. Furthermore, "The enslaved did not get days off, but by convention those that converted to Christianity were allowed to attend one church service per week." (Saint Helena Island).

Therefore, through this memorial inscription we honor all the lives that were taken away. This is a moment to remember about our past and how cruel the colonizers had been to the enslaved people. They had barely any space while in the ships, with 6 ' by 1' 4 space allowed for each man and 5' 10 by 1'4 allowed for each woman. This is one evidence of the many inhuman conditions they were put through. Having the knowledge of what happened in the past is how we prevent history from repeating itself. In that time period,10 thousands of slaves were taken to Cape Verde. The enslaved people were in charge of developing the plantation economy of cotton, indigo, orchil and urzella dyes, rum, hides, and livestock.  "The entire country became a Portuguese colony in the 19th century, known as Portuguese Guinea.
