The theme of this poem is to not agree with others, but have your own, original thoughts and ideas. Dickinson says that people that are sane, according to others, agree with one another on every point. Those who are insane disagree with others and have different opinions on matters. The author thinks that the insane people are the most sane people in the world.

Reading Focus: 3. According to the speaker in "Much Madness is divinest Sense," what are the main criteria for "madness" and "sense"?

According to the speaker, the criteria for "sense" is agreeing with the majority and going with the crowd. Diverging from the majority or expressing one's disagreement are the criteria for "madness".

Literary Focus: 8. Dickinson liked to use dashes-a mark of punctuation her early editors removed. How do dashes help emphasize certain ideas in "Much Madness is divinest Sense"?

Dashes emphasize the thoughts Dickinson is trying to portray throughout the poems, lasting the thought in your mind. The dashes separate her ideas in each line creating more of a dramatic effect.

The tone of this poem is madness. This is apparent throughout the poem, since it is based off the perception of madness and sanity. The poem uses words such as madness, demur, dangerous, and chain. It is an ironic poem because her ideas in this poem contradict one another and create a paradox of thoughts. It differs between madness by being different, or sanity by agreeing and vise versa.
