1. Your name, matric number, date
A168282
7/8/2021

2. How is your progress?

For week 2, I had 3 sessions with each session of approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. For this week, I covered 2 units (Unit 4 & Unit 5) with my Mandarin teacher, Ms Tan. As unit 4 was a wide topic, it required more time which took up to two sessions. Besides covering the topics, Ms Tan does speaking and listening practice. This is done via a question and answer session (QnA) where both my listening and speaking skills can be assessed. I found myself to have some difficulties in listening so Ms Tan wanted to spend more time on my listening skills.

Unit 4 was on occupation. In this topic, I learned many occupations in Mandarin such as 护士 （hu shi- nurse）, 医生 (Yi sheng- doctor), 老师 (lao shi- teacher), 教练 (jiao lian- coach), 秘书(mi shu- clerk), 律师 (lü shi- lawyer), 学生(xue sheng- student), 画家(hua jia- painter). Besides occupation, I learned on words that is work/occupation related such as 公司(gong si-company), 工作(gong zuo- work), 部门经理(bu men jing li- department manager),画(hua-to paint), 每天( mei tian- everyday), 下午(xia wu-afternoon). I too learnt something that is not in my textbook from my teacher which are the specific words used during this pandemic such as 疫情(yi qing- pandemic), 白旗(bai qi- white flag), 行动管制(xing dong guan zhi- Movement Control Order).

In unit 5, I learned about vocabulary related to age. In mandarin age is called as 岁(sui). Other than age, I too learned words on family relationships like 大妈(da ma- aunty), 外婆(wai po- grandma) and also words expressing a verb/ adjective such as 真(zhen-really), 好听(hao ting- pleasing to ear). Something I learned other than from textbook are on different forms of words that bring the meaning Mandarin language: 汉语（han yu）, 中文(zhong wen), 普通话(pu tong hua) and 华文(hua wen).

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Unit 4:
Since I’m still a student, how will I answer when someone asks me whether I’m working?

你在工作吗？(Ni zai gong zuo ma?- Are you working?)

不，我还在大学读书/学习( Bu, wo zai da xue du shu/ xue xi.- No, I’m still studying in university)
Other than that, for grammer, I learnt in Mandarin we locate the time first in a sentence.

            For example:

每天 下午(mei tian xia wu- everyday afternoon)

我每天下午去图书馆。(Wo mei tian xia wu qu tu shu guan- I go to library every afternoon.)

Unit 5:

            电(dian- electricity)

            电影(dian ying-movie)

            电视(dian shi-TV)

            停电(ting dian- power failure)

4. Your feelings & thoughts

This week is great. Eventhough I had lesser sessions this week due to exam preparation, I still learnt many words. I’m happy that I’m learning words other than in my textbooks.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Now I know how to key in mandarin words in my keyboard using the pin yin method which was super easy. I start texting my teacher in mandarin in Whatsapp application. As more sessions I go through, I can start texting my friends who could understand mandarin in mandarin characters after this.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

So this week I found this one pronounciation in Mandarin:

律师 (lüshi)- the character lü is to be pronounced as u and the lips should be positioned in oval shape. It was a challenging word for me. Even with multiple try, my Mandarin teacher said I need more practice on pronouncing that character.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

GREAT, DO-ABLE

8. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

Cover Unit 6(height and weight), Unit 7(Address and Telephone number) and Unit 8(family members).

Here, I have attached my week 2 progress video.

How is your progress?
For my week 2, I watched lesson 2,3 and 4. Each lesson have its own subtopics to cover. Lesson 2 is about asking peoples name in Chinese. For example, 你姓什么? { ni xing shenme } this means What is your last name? I also learnt new chinese letters. There are two simple ways to ask people's name where we use the same sentence but we can replaced the "xing" word to "jiao". This means what are you called? I also learnt that there is something called radical in Chinese where they individually cannot be used.

Lesson 3 is about Nationality. Here I learnt how to tell people our nationality and how to asked about it.

中 | zhōng | middle; center
国 | guó | country; nation
中国 | Zhōngguó | China
人 | rén | people; person
中国人 | Zhōngguórén | Chinese (people)
是 | shì | to be
I also learnt how to construct sentence and little chinese grammer. The word "shi" is used as am or is also sometimes.

Lesson 4 is about numbers. Your feelings & thoughts
I am so excited. I have heard all my friends using this but back then I was blur but now I can pick up those words. Interestingly, some words I can connect like in Chinese they refer you as "ni" and same its same in Tamil too. Making Chinese letters all is fun. I try some. Quiz experience is my favourite sometimes I will get 100 and there are sometime I got below 60.
5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
I try myself again for the quiz that I got low marks to see any improvement.

1. Your name, matric number, date
-Zulamirulharif Bin Zorkarnain
- A168137
-9/8/2021

2. What have you done?
For week 2, I learnt a lot from my 7 lectures in this week and each lectures with the activities and exercises and self learning take about 1.5 - 2 hours per lecture or topic. On the first lecture which is the easiest, i learnt about numbers start from 1-99. Its quite straightforward actually. For my second lecture, i learnt about time. Now i can tell time in Chinese and ask question about what is the time now in Chinese Mandarin. In the third lecture, i learned about morning, afternoon and others in Mandarin and how can I used the word properly which is quite confusing. I learned about how can I explain my daily activity in Mandarin such as I get up at six in the morning and many more! So I learned more vocabulary in Mandarin. That's all I done on the fourth lecture and this lecture took the longest time to understand and complete. In the fifth lecture, I learned about food so I can talk in Mandarin and ask about food in Mandarin. In the sixth lecture, I learned about fruits and what we called them in Chinese such as apple, banana and oranges. On my last lecture for this week, I learned about basic groceries item such as chicken, meat, vegetables in Mandarin. I also done quizzes prepared by my lecturer and I scored almost all of it.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Points that I need to remember from week 2 is when we tell about time in Mandarin. It was not the same as in English. We need to tell either it is early morning, morning , noon or evening. For an example, we want to tell about 6:00 AM, instead of using the AM in English but in Mandarin we say 6 in the early morning (Zǎoshang liu diǎn). Next example, 'I have dinner at 8:00 pm'. We dont use AM or PM in Mandarin to express time so we say like ' Wǒ wǎnshàng ba diǎn chī wǎnfàn '. So, wǎnshàng is evening in Mandarin. Next i also need to memorize a lot of vocabulary for groceries item so when Im go shopping, I can use them to ask the seller in Mandarin and i think it was so cool!

4. Your feelings & thoughts

My feelings and thoughts for my second week is I feel more confident and excited since now I learned more. Mandarin was so complex in pronounciation for me but when I practice more I think I can manage it but to be honest I am not so fluent especially when expressing the pronounciation. I also feel so grateful with forum in the course since it help me a lot to make me more understand and also make new friends. I am so happy about it. Next, the quizzes really drive my to work harder to get full marks and I hope I can consistentlt get a full mark in the quizzes.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

One good thing that I can practice now is I can order food or buy drinks in Mandarin since I already memorize fried rice, fried noodles, pau, coke, mineral water, coffee or tea in Mandarin so I can used it now! For example if i want to buy some Coke from a chinese shop near my home, I can tell them 'Wǒ yào kělè' means I want coke.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

My difficulties and concern during this week is try to remember a lot of new vocabulary starting from fruit, vegetable, type of meat and drinks in Mandarin was extremely hard. So, how did I cope this by I choose my favourite type of food and drinks and try memorize it so I can distinguish what vocabulary will fit my lifestyle since I will used it more often. Although it was quite tough to remember but if there is a will and there is a way. So I made some notes about what I love to eat or drinks in Mandarin so I can used it when I buy some drinks at 'Kedai Runcit' near my house which the owner is Chinese and I can shocked them a lil bit.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

My 2 words to describe Elective Posting is Huge Progress

8. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

My plan for week 3 is to continue the course prepared by my lecturer and do read all of the reading material and watch youtube that teach my about Mandarin. I also plan to pass all my quizzes with 100% mark.

1. Your name, matric number, date
Wong Zhi Wen (A167882)
9/8/2021

2. How is your progress?
In the week 2 module, I covered 5 videos, 4 readings and 4 quizzes. The videos teaches about how to introduce myself, greet and ask someone's nationalities or their jobs in Korean. I also learn how to answer those questions in Korean. Lesson 1 is about greeting and introducing in Korean. For instance, 안녕하세요 저는 황쯔웬이에요 which means Hello, I am Wong Zhi Wen :) while 제 이름은 황쯔웬이에요 which means my name is Wong Zhi Wen.
For the second lesson, I learn about how to ask others their nationality and how to respond. Some new vocabularies of
countries which I learnt are:
한국 Korea
미국 USA
중국 China
독일 Germany
For the third lesson, I learn about how to ask a person their occupation and how to respond to it. For example, 학생 which means student. 학생이에요? which means Are you a student? Besides, I also did self practice in pronouncing each word and also writing them out because they are quite difficult to memorize at first glance.

3. Points to remember from week 2!
In Korean, there are no greetings like good morning, good afternoon, and goodnight. They simply say 안녕하세요
Annyeonghaseyo, which means Hello, regardless of day and night. If it is among friends of same age, they will say 안녕 Annyeong, which is a friendlier way to greet among themselves. A formal way of greeting is 안녕하십니까. If the word has no final consonant in the last syllable, we should use 예요. While if there is a final consonant, we use 이에요.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I am glad that I can now read Korean although it might take some time to read a full sentence. It is also fascinating that I
can finally read the lyrics of a Korean song which I was not able to read before. I am glad that I am making progress now and I hope to improve better in the next week.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
I installed Korean language in my keyboard and my phone. Now I can try to type Korean words from my phone and google them when I want to find the meaning and pronunciation of it. It also helps me in forming words using the vowels and consonants as I need to think before I type.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
With more lessons, I have more vocabularies to memorize which requires a lot of practices. Also, I find it hard to pronounce some of the words and to form sentences. However, I find it easier to learn when i jot it down in my notebook and refer to it whenever I want to memorize the words or the sentence. I also practices in speaking by watching Youtube videos and following how native speakers talk.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Rewarding
Challenging

8. Your plan for next week (Week 3)
I will continue on my readings and practices to prepare for week 3 and also continue the course in Coursera. I am looking forward to what I will be learning next week.

1. A167707 / 11/8/2021

2. For week 2, ive learned about way to introduce myself and to create a basic conversation in korean language. I also learned few names of countries, occupations and also ways to have conversation with people with different level of age. I did few quizzes also after each lesson so i was able to understand and learn better! Few questions i got it wrong though but it’s okey! I learned from my mistakes!

3. Important points to remember is that korean use honorifics when talking to different people where this follows their level of age. Thus, way of talking to teacher, parents and friends are different. Then, i also need to remember the end word are different according to the last alphabet in the previous word whether it’s a consonant or a vowel.

4. Lessons in week 2 are very exciting because i can start to speak in korean! Thus this makes me feel very eager to learn more!

5.

1. A172048 (11/8/2021)

2. For week 2, I learned how to introduce myself, how to greet a person in Korean, how to ask for nationality and job from others and how to answer them, memorise some names of countries and jobs in Korean, and how to respond using a negative form. I also practice the basic conversation which has been taught in the lecture videos. Overall, week 2 is more about learning the basics of conversation when we meet new people

3. Points to remember from week 2 :

For names in Korean, we say the family name first and then the first name.

If the name/occupation has no final consonant in its syllable, use yeyo ‘예요’ as the question ending

If the name/occupation has a final consonant in its syllable, use iyeyo ‘이에요‘ as the question ending

In English, we use Mr/Miss to call someone, while in Korean, we use first name + shi ‘씨’ to call someone. First name + shi ‘씨’ is for informal situations, while family name + first name + shi ‘씨’ is for formal situations.

When asking, if we use interrogative words like when, where, why, who, what and how, we need to lower the tone at the end of the sentence. However, if we ask someone without an interrogative word, we need to raise the tone at the end of the sentence to make it sound like a question.

In a narrative sentence, we should use a subject particle, 이 ‘e’ or 가 ‘ga’ depending on the final consonant in the last syllable of the word as a subject. If there is a final consonant in the syllable, use 이 ‘e’ while if there is a final vowel in the syllable, use 가 ‘ga’

The type of speech is different according to age, position and society in Korea. It is called the honorific system in Korean. In Korean, we have a formal speech style, an informal speech style and a neutral speech style.

Annyeonghaseyo is used to greet older people, while annyeong is used to greet children or younger people

4. I was so excited and happy because I could introduce myself in Korean and ask someone in the Korean language. I can also speak basic Korean with my sister at home. It was fun because my progress on this course is quite good. At first, I didn't know anything about the Korean language, but now I can speak and spell Korean words correctly.

5. One good thing that I can do is have a basic conversation with my friend on WhatsApp using the Korean language as I have already added the Korean language to the keyboard setting on my phone.

6. I have difficulties spelling some Korean words. I used Google translator to help me spell Korean words.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting so far is nice progress!

8. For week 3, I plan to complete the tasks for weeks 3 and 4 in the Coursera, continue practicing speaking Korean, watching Korean movies and listening to Korean songs. I also plan to revise my notes that I have made from the past 2 weeks.

1. A172049 (14/8/2021)

2. For week 2, I learned how to introduced myself and saying my name in Korean. I also learned how to greet a person.

안녕하세요 저는 샤샤이에요
Annyeonghaseyo, jeoneun syasya iyeyo.
(Hello, my name is Syasya)

이름이 뭐에요?
Ireumi mwoyeyo?
(What is your name?)

안녕히 가세요.
Annyeonghi gaseyo.
(Good bye.)

I also learn few countries name and occupations. I did the quizzes provided after each lesson and with it i could understand better. I did not get full marks but I learned from my mistakes.

3. Important things to remember would be to greet people proprerly and memorise few occupations names in Korean so that i could acknowledge them when having conversations with other people.

4. I am glad that I know more about Korean language although i need some time to think when reading and remember certain words in Korean. It is fascinating that i understand when people told about their occupation in korean drama such as 가수 (Gaju=Singer), 간호사 (ganhosa=nurse), 의사 (uisa=doctor).

5. Good thing that i get from the course is now i have learned the proper way to greet other people by using honorific, tell them my name and ask them for their name and told them my occupation.

6. I think it became a bit harder as i go along because the sentences become more complicated.

7. Challenging and progressing

8.

1. Ooi Shi Ley A167900 (16/8)

2. For week 2, i completed 5 lectures, 4 readings and 4 quizzes. Unlike what i had learn in week 1, i started to heard how to have simple conversations in hangul this week, it was indeed interesting and fun. I finally able to make a simple self introduction in hangul. The quizzes are a little challenging this time. I did not manage to score full marks during the first attempt. So, i did the second attempt after some revisions in order to score all the quizzes.

3. I guess the most important point from this week’s lesson is all about Korean grammar. Korean grammar is totally different from english grammar. Hence, the sequence of every words are so important as i may cause some misunderstandings. Furthermore, i guess Korean society has a very special culture with its emphasis on respect for ancestors, age, and seniority. Hence, we must be extra careful while using words as it reflects our behaviour that is respectful and considerate of other people. Formal terms are often used while talking to parents, teachers and seniors who are elder than us.

4. At first I thought learning Korean language is easy. After this week’s lesson, i started to feel a little challenging as the hangul phases and terms gets harder. I found it a little hard to memorise some long phrases. However, i will definitely try my best to complete the task given.

5. Like Week one, i still make notes for every lesson. Besides, i take some videos of myself during the lesson as it will strengthen my memory while watching back all those videos.

6.I found it hard to memorise and reading long phrases, so i will always watch back the videos that i had recorded during the class.

7. Brainstorming (cause my brain 🧠 had been in a rest mode for some time haha) , fruitful

8. Complete all the task assigned. Try to score all the quizzes again.
