Orlando's Orange County is home to a vast amount of Spanish-speaking Latin American communities, as we can see in Delerme (2020): https://doi.org/10.5744/florida/9780813066257.003.0001. Since Lake Eola Park belongs to Orange County, and most of these communities are Spanish-speaking, it makes sense that an important warning like this is in Spanish.

The speech function of this notice is referential and directive because it provides information on how to avoid avian flu while giving direct commands such as "do not do this/avoid this." The notice also gives a sense of formality and high social distance since it addresses its audience in third person, which is the way Spanish speakers express formality (Spanish Pronouns: When to use “Tú” and “Usted” | The Glossika Blog).

Church Advertisement

Based on its language (Spanish) and content (such as the name of the church which translates "Divine Unction"), we know the advertisement is aimed at Christian Spanish-speakers of this area. Besides using Spanish, it also uses its own registers. For example, in Christianity, the word "unction" refers to receiving God's grace (Unction Meaning - Bible Definition and References (biblestudytools.com)). Also, the ad is clearly referential since it contains contact information.

Wine Event Advertisement

The "Osphere Grill & Bar" restaurant directs this advertisement to people who are into wine culture, which is itself a speech community since it has its own set of terminologies and customs. Also, the advertisement has a creative touch by writing "wine down" instead of the original phrase "wind down," making the advertisement more outstanding for the intended audience. So, according to Holmes and Wilson's (2022) definitions, this advertisement serves 3 speech functions: phatic ("wine down/wind down" is a phrase that invites people to relax), referential (it says when it takes place), and poetic ("wine down" creatively incorporates both the act of drinking wine and the act of loosening up in one).

Nightclub Event Advertisement

The nightclub "The Beacham" directs this kind of billboard advertisements to people who attend nightclub events such as live shows, open bars, and other festivities. They use very informal and incomplete sentences/words, such as " Sun Latn 4 hour open bar," or "St Paddys block party," "St. Paddy's day" being the informal way of referring to St. Patrick's day (St. Patty's Day or St. Paddy's Day?: The Correct Nickname | Merriam-Webster). Therefore, the language function is both phatic and referential. It is phatic because it evokes a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with minimal social distance among participants, and it is referential because it provides information about when each event will take place (Holmes & Wilson, 2022).

Advertisement for Pedestrians

This advertisement is probably directed to younger pedestrians since they are the ones who tend to use headphones when walking on the street. The phrase "eyes up, ears open" reflects poetic speech function because it is an example of a literary device called isocolon, which “involves a succession of sentences, phrases, and clauses of grammatically equal length” (Isocolon - Definition and Examples of Isocolon (literarydevices.net)). Moreover, the sentence in the green background that reads "take your headphones off when crossing" has a directive speech function because it is in the imperative form, making the advertisement feel more like a command (Holmes & Wilson, 2022).

The phrase "proud past, bright future" in these advertisements signalizes that the library has an outstanding story, and that there is more to come. Moreover, the slogan "learn, grow, connect" uses registers —what Holmes and Wilson (2022) define as the terms/expression used in a particular community—that appeal to communities in Orlando that tend to visit public libraries (since they relate to the act of evolving and acquiring knowledge). When visiting the official website of the Orange County Library System (Orlando Public Library - Orange County Library System (ocls.info)), we realize that its content resonates with this slogan since it offers resources to acquire technological skills, learn a language, get a job, etc.

This mini van advertises a female attorney named "Amal," who creatively incorporated three languages in her advertisement (English, Spanish, and Arabic) to attract people from all three speaking communities, probably because all three of those are common in this area of Orlando. Also, since the advertisement contains phone numbers and services offered, we can say its function is referential. In addition, according to the article How Law Firms Can Bring Empathy into Their Client-Facing Content (biggerlawfirm.com), the use of terms/registers like "slip-and-fall" and "car accidents" in this advertisement (all in their respective languages) empathize with the audience since it makes them feel less alone in these situations.

This bar/restaurant advertises its services in both English and Spanish to attract both Spanish and English speech communities. However, Spanish seems to be the main language here, probably because this is a Mexican restaurant. For instance, the phrase "Hola amigos" ("Hello friends" in English) is the biggest in size. Also, the parts that say "Entra ahora" (Get in now) and "Nuestras horas" (business hours), are all in Spanish. Only a small portion of it is in English, such as "Hungry? Thirsty?" and "No cash accepted." Moreover, according to Holmes and Wilson (2022) the word "amigos/friends" is an "endearment term" or affectionate nickname (p. 511) which involves phatic speech function.
