CEMC Reflection - Session 1 by Hanna Novrelin Purba

Dear our brilliant mentees, think about what you learned in today’s session, how do you see the connection between gender equality and climate action in your own context? Reflect on the principles of the Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) and Leaving No One Behind (LNOB), and how they could shape fair and inclusive climate solutions. Consider how gender inequalities—whether economic, social, or political—might affect people’s ability to respond to climate challenges. Share your thoughts on the value of moving from gender mainstreaming to gender-transformative approaches, and describe one action you could personally take to promote gender-responsive climate action in your everyday life or community.

This opening session was such an eye-opener. It got me buzzing with excitement to keep learning and to see where I can truly contribute. I used to only know gender issues on a surface level, but diving deeper made me realize how passionate I actually am, especially after learning how gender and the climate crisis are deeply connected...and even grounded in human rights. The session was rich yet enlightening, like a bright moon in the dark night. I also loved how everyone in this batch was so open in sharing their questions, thoughts, and reflections!

Today’s session reminded me how closely gender equality and climate action are linked, especially in Eastern Indonesia where women play key roles in food, water, and energy management. Applying HRBA and LNOB can make climate solutions more inclusive. I’m inspired to create spaces for women and youth to share ideas for local climate action.

This session was very insightful and opened up many new perspectives, especially regarding the strategies and approaches UN Women employs to address the climate crisis through an intersectional gender lens. And yes, we need deeper efforts to unpack and address the root causes embedded in power relations, social norms, and unequal social structures. Therefore, a transformative gender approach is essential, particularly in addressing the climate crisis.

I’m really looking forward to the upcoming sessions to gain a deeper understanding of how responsive and inclusive policymaking should be designed to meet the challenges of the climate crisis. In particular, I’m eager to explore sharper gender perspectives and the experiences of countries in the Global South, which often face the impacts of climate change with complexities that differ significantly from those in the Global North.

Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I see how gender equality and climate action are tied together. HRBA and LNOB sound nice on paper, but for them to actually work, we need to stop treating them like box-ticking exercises. It’s not just about “including women” or “inviting marginalized groups to meetings,” it’s about shifting power and letting them actually lead the decisions that affect their lives.

Whether in income, education, or political voice, gender inequalities make a huge difference in how people can adapt to or fight climate change. If those gaps stay the same, even the so-called “solutions” will end up helping the privileged first and leaving the rest behind. That’s why moving from gender mainstreaming to gender-transformative approaches matters: it’s about questioning the root causes and not just making things look fair on the surface.

For me personally, one small action I can take is to call out tokenism when I see it whether in projects, campaigns, or even casual conversations, and push for more meaningful participation. Change won’t happen overnight, but at least we can stop settling for half-baked “inclusive” solutions that are anything but.

In my community work, I see how climate challenges like flooding, extreme heat, and waste issues affect everyone differently. Women, especially in marginalized communities, often face additional burdens but have less say in decision-making. The Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) discussed earlier reminds me that climate action must protect the dignity and rights of every person. I want to learn more about this approach and strengthen my actions. Can't wait to learn more !

The session was short, engaging, and gave a clear overview of the gender-climate nexus. Bindu, the speaker from UN Women, brought it to life with real stories from her work. It was a great reminder that climate and gender issues cut across many sectors and are never neutral. The best part, I think, is how it pushed us to unlearn old assumptions about climate and gender, and start seeing them in a whole new way.
