1. Glass Ceiling / Glass Escalator

The glass ceiling is a metaphor used to describe a part of workplace inequality that women experience. It is the invisible barriers that women come across that limit their opportunity to move up in the workplace regardless of their ability and skill. This is accompanied by the idea of the glass escalator that men have in non-traditional male roles.

The image that I chose for the glass ceiling is male nurses. Although I think it's great that more men are going into nursing, I think it is much easier for them to go through the process of becoming a nurse in this female dominated field than women. You can contrast this with a woman who is becoming a doctor, which is a male dominated field, she will have a significantly harder time than men becoming doctors in a male dominated field.

Group think is a phenomenon where a group of people strives to be "harmonious", and that can lead to many negative things, like not thinking critically about certain things. This allows for a sort of herd mentality.

On the photo is people worshiping in church. Although this isn't inherently bad, many religious groups (no matter the region) develop a sort of group think, especially when you are so consumed by the community.

Deviance is any violation of norms. It is relative and varies and has different forms.

The image I chose was a photo of graffiti I took at China Beach in San Francisco. Graffiti is looked down upon for many reasons, especially by older people and people who live in the suburbs and not in urban areas(from my experience). While many younger people see graffiti as a part of the culture, especially in urbanized places. Graffiti is used for many different reasons. Depending on the case it is a form of art, a form of rebellion, a form of protest. Graffiti is deviant in its nature.

A stereotype is a generalized belief about something or someone. A self-fulfilling stereotype is a type of stereotype that alters the way a person acts that subsequently makes the stereotype appear to be true.

Above is a photo of a quote about down syndrome. Often people with certain disorders and syndromes like autism or down syndrome comes with its own biases and stereotypes. It is a very good of self-fulfilling stereotypes because people often believe that people with these disorders are not able to do certain things like do sports, work, go to school, and so on. Because of these beliefs, people that have these disorders do not get to meet their full potential or follow their dreams and so on.

Burning man is a week-long festival that takes place every year in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. The festival creates a sort of "city" where there is community, art, rituals, barter/trade, and so on. Burning man relates to a few concepts in sociology. The main one being culture.

Deeper Questions:

2. Who or what is it for? Why was it created?

Burning man is for artists. It is also for people who reject capitalism.

10. How do people interact with this?

During this festival, people bring art and look at various art.

Peer Pressure is a type of influence on a person from someone that is from the same social/age group. The pressure to conform to something is much stronger among people you know.

In the image above is a photo of a popular, expensive skincare brand called Drunk Elephant. A few months ago, people on social media were complaining about "Sephora 10-year-olds" (10-year-olds that go to Sephora and spend money on expensive skincare and makeup). Kids nowadays feel like they will get made fun of if they don't have these trendy things.

Socialization is the Process by which we learn the ways of society or particular groups. Resocialization is the process by which you relearn or learn new ways and norms.

When I think of socialization and resocialization, I think of inmates. When they get incarcerated, they have to go resocialize to a new set of norms and ways of life. Not only needing to be accustomed to the rules of the prison, but also needing to socialize into the prison culture and rules that were cultivated by the inmates. The second time an inmate goes through socialization is when the inmate is released from prison. Some people serve long sentences and so when they finally get out they have to relearn the norms and lifestyles of society. They also have to unlearn many of the habits that they have learned in prison that they needed there to survive, but are useless in the outside world. It is common that the world before someone went to prison and the world after has changed completely. Some have to learn how to use technology or learn new things that have been changed over time while they were serving their sentence.
