There isnt enough time in the day to teach AND test. We need time to plan. Whether that be buy out days or summer planning hours as a team. We don't have time in the year for one more test on top of what else we are doing and there isn't enough time in the year to teach AND test. I don't think the Language Live curriculum is sufficient for out EL 1s and 2s because there is not a big enough focus on language acquisition. I would like to see more TEFL or TESOL (the internationally recognized frameworks for English Language instruction) strategies incorporated into our classrooms.

I would also like to see KHSD increase the pay of support staff (BIAs) so that we are able to hire/retain these valuable employees. Finally, I would like to see KHSD reevaluate the methods used to determine ELD levels and possibly look at interventions for students who are illiterate in their first languages.

I think our ELD 1 and ELD 2 classes should focus more on language acquisition than on literacy skills. While we offer significant support for core subjects, prioritizing rapid English proficiency is the best support we can offer. Some ELD students need literacy intervention due to education gaps from their home country, but this should possibly be addressed separately from language acquisition. Research suggests that addressing literacy gaps in their native language may be more effective.

Employment of a phonics approach to improving reading through a program like Language Live is commendable; however, the drill-and-kill nature of the program is tedious and frankly boring to students. This is my first year teaching ELD, but I am impressed with how organized the program is compared to other programs. I love that most of the curriculum is organized into slides for each level, and I benefited the most from the slides because ELD 3’s slides were so well developed. The PD was most helpful during the first semester because I had no idea what to do. Collaborating with other ELD 3 teachers and getting their feedback and ideas was awesome.

I love that there are themes throughout the Language Live workbooks, but how fun would it be to take a field trip that connects to our learning? And a listening and speaking activity that is formatted like the ELPAC test and also relates to unit 1 Bats. It would tie everything together and it would be ELPAC practice that is embedded in what we are already doing.

I really appreciate the newsletters and being informed of all upcoming events. I don't feel alone in the slightest. I also really appreciate the integration of Language! Live reminders and ELPAC practices embedded in the PowerPoints. They were really helpful in remembering to include them. On the coordinator side, I really appreciate the PD opportunities, both for us to go to and for us to use with our staff (Ellevation Strategies). They have made everything so much easier!

I believe the curriculum needs to be more engaging. The students do not care about bats, dinosaurs, etc. They did like the history aspect with Anne Frank though. Cause: All incoming EL students are placed into ELD 1 until the testing dictates their proper level. In the past few years, testing has taken a long time leaving a significant number of students to spend unnecessary time ,2 periods, in a class that does not address their language needs. Outside of the concerns with LL which have been discussed, I am concerned with how misplaced many of the students are coming from 8th grade. Is this an issue only at my site? Is this how the junior high places them? I have found that when I pull my students' ELPAC from prior spring, many should be in a lower class. If they start at level 4 and do not pass after two years, they get no credit.

Support. The one thing that is going really well with EL/ML Program is the amount of support that they offer and provide to teachers, especially new teachers and teachers new to the district. I would like to see more BIAs in every ELD class, and interventions for our EL students who are obviously LTELs. An easier route for our LTELs to NOT have to be in ELD more than 2 years. Too many students repeat ELD not because they failed, but because they were a few points off from passing ELPAC.

Our obligation should be the success of students and ensuring that they are falling in love with learning. Keeping them in ELD classes just because they cannot pass ELPAC is doing a disservice to them. Our LTELs sometimes don't even speak another language, just their parents do, and yet they are stuck in ELD. They lose their love of learning and begin to think they are dumb, when we know they aren't.

We need to address the fact that our kids do not need ANOTHER ELD class (ELD 5). All this does is reiterate the negative thoughts the kids have. We need to find a high rigor, engaging curriculum that engages our students; they hate LanguageLive. It does not do anything for them, and they do not apply themselves because they feel like it is pointless and babyish. They check out and, with more testing, become overwhelmed and shut done.

We have an incredibly dedicated staff, from the District Office (TOSAs, Carolina, Angie and Nancy) to the individual sites (MLL Coordinators, EL Teachers, Bilingual Techs and Bilingual Instructional Assistants.) I agree with Kimberly. The curriculum needs to be more engaging. EL students are the complete opposite of regular students. They come from cultures where they like to communicate and interact with others and tend to be more dynamic. BIAs should be on campus all day. ELD 5 needs to be separate from ELD 4. Otherwise, what's the point? We NEED a literacy specialist. That's a capacity that very few of us are trained in and students require specialized help.

I believe that making the PD meetings a continuous activity throughout the year would be beneficial for EL students. As they offer a lot of information and training for teachers and BIAs, which can ensure a higher success rate amongst the EL program.

The KHSD obligations are to teach the students the language. Provide them with the tools necessary to learn how to speak, read and write English. The EL program in every school should provide an inclusive curriculum where students feel comfortable as they adjust to their new academic environment.

KHSD should promote inclusivity within the integrated EL classes where teachers participate in the student's learning journey. These teachers should be able to offer translated assignments, lectures, and tests. Some teachers do this now, but creating strategies that enable even more teachers to practice this, would be beneficial for the EL students. Therefore, students may have a better opportunity at advancing in their overall language acquisition.
