To Tell You the Truth. From the title itself, I have felt like this essay will come with several revelations. It is a story that narrated how the author lied so much as a child, yet did not see anything wrong with it at all which is quite concerning. For the most part, the events accounted for are the memorable lies like getting her classmate’s bag, saying she’s part of a swimming competition, and even pretending it’s her birthday, all of which she said at a very young age. However, lies come with an intention, from getting benefits whether tangible material o intangible praise to escaping the consequences. It was evident in these events that the author gained something which made her immune to the guilt of such an act.

The perspective presented was mostly the author’s because there were questions on whether or not the people she fooled found out the truth, and if yes, why did they not confront her? The stories had the first person point of view, and the other characters were not thoroughly described, nor depicted their reactions to the author’s lies. If you think of it, they either believed the lie, or they know it was not true but chose to go along with it. These open questions were projected at the beginning foreshadowing the inherent loneliness of lying with its implication on the author’s relationship with other people.

Although, another highlight of the essay was the author’s turning point, the event that changed her stance on lying; reading her mother’s diary. Sadly, the author had a rough childhood and a harsh household and this led her to create this alternate life, one that has the beautiful things she could dream of. However, upon reading the diary, unveiled the sacrifices and suffering the mother had to endure raising her children alone which is an indirect projection of the mother’s perspective. This ultimately gave the author a new outlook on how she chooses to live her life, urging her to stop lying.

All these said I would describe the author as self-reflective. She started recognizing how grave her lies were as a child and the agenda behind her actions driven by selfish desires. Next, she put to heart all that she knew about her mother, giving more importance to the authentic life she has despite its flaws. It is reflecting that in something so imperfect, there is meaning and purpose. But most importantly, she used nostalgia to understand what her younger self had to go through that caused all the lies. Therefore, yes, she has decided to change her ways but she will never get mad at her past self for everything, saying that she would give her the tightest embrace to show that is not entirely her fault, that she was young, naive, and left with no choice.

This represents the world we have; cruel and lonely. Everyone has a reality they want to escape, whether it may be family problems, loss of jobs, and many other battles. The creation of another life is a projection of the life we want live but could never have. It is the harsh truth that the world is unfair, leading to many people left behind. Additionally, the world is a lonely place. As questioned by the author on why she was never confronted by others about her lies, this implies that people will never really care about who you are and what you do. Quite frankly, lying can be an attempt to catch people’s attention, especially with absurd ones, which oftentimes fail. Most people settle with what they see and hear at surface level and won’t try to get to know you deeper. This portrays the loose ties within our communities, which I believe is the root of ineffective and insufficient problem solving in society.

With this, the chosen text is relevant to the world today because it calls for change specifically on the issues of poverty and abuse evident in the author’s story. Their life characterized by financial instability, lack of job opportunities, and distant family connections is what lead the author to bring maximize the horizons of her imagination to pretend that they are not struggling. Thus, these families should be given adequate service and attention to alleviate them from the poorest way of life. Moreover, the text calls for empathy. It encourages the readers to look out for the people around us, to form more meaningful relationships grounded on shared experiences and profound connections. Even the people we despise the most for their wrongdoings have a story to tell that is worth listening to. In the end this allows us to build a community that safeguards the well-being of every individual.

Similar to the author, I did not have the most ideal childhood. Unlike other children, I did not grow up just playing innocently, I had to face the separation of my parents in second grade and the rest was history. This led me to also lie about what I do at home because it provided me with the security that I was like everybody else, although it’s gone the moment I get home. But it was a cycle I was willing to take, to pretend happily in school with my friends then feel sad at home with my family, repeat. It became my coping mechanism, at the age of eight.

Thus, it saddens me how it is not just the author, nor just me who experience such heavy emotion at a young age. There are hundreds, and thousands of other kids who do not live like children, but rather are forced to mature due to the implications of life. That they are deprived of the life they deserve so they end up with something of their own, it is about time that we provide children with what is long due. Happiness, support, and comfort should not be part of a kid’s imagination, it should be the reality they live in.
