My students are consistently reading around 300-400 pages average a week. The volume they are able to read with JOY is amazing! My students raise their hands now and volunteer to do their own book talks if I have not prepared one for the day. The culture in the room is one of readers. I follow Penny Kittle's methods in Book Love doing reading goals and allowing time in class for choice reading every day. Pairing independent reading with book clubs and carefully selected text sets has raised the rigor in their student talk (student-led socratic seminar on real-life topics found in their books), writing about their reading, and their comparison of ideas across texts.

Also, more kids that ever before can find a book of interest to them and finish it over time.

I have students turn to their choice books as we learn various literary devices/strategies. Because they're reading books they like, it's really easy and fun for them to dig into their books and come up with beautiful notebook pages and thought logs.

Struggling readers are taking the risk to ask for and look for books that help them grow as readers.

Students are coming to check out books. They love to talk about what they are reading and have given me suggestions for more books! We are building a reading culture!

Yesterday the timer signal went off at the end of our 10 minutes of Independent Choice Reading. I announced, "Okay, find a good place to stop," then waited half a minute. When I looked around the quiet room, the majority of students were still reading. This is one instance where I'm happy when my students don't listen to class instruction--they couldn't put their books down! Now, that says something. :)

This example is not from my own classroom, but from my ILT where I'm working with some science teachers, teaching them close reading strategies...in our last meeting they reported that they had noticed students did significantly better on the parts of the unit where they used the rough draft read, read through a lens, revise your thinking strategy than where they hadn't (from mostly 1s and 2s to 3s and 4s). They're planning on testing it again with this next unit and recording data (so they can take the to other science teachers to encourage them to try using reading strategies in science).
