The goal of mediation is to find the essence of your existence and realism, therefore imagination is too abstract and ambiguous for Descartes to accept. Descartes wants to find the axioms of life by dissecting them to a point where they can be recognized but understood. If you include a perspective that is imaginative, it allows for his argument to become too ambiguous to be able to find answers and axioms.
