There are two variants of Scylla's backstory as a monster, one claim is that she was once a beautiful water nymph who got turned into a hideous monster by a women out of jealousy some say Circe transformed her others claim Amphitrite did it. The other variant of the backstory is she was born a monster into a monstrous family. Scylla, along with another monster introduced in the same part of the story as her, Charybdis, represent the idea of being "Between a rock and a hard place". As Odysseus leaves for home he is instructed by Circe to hold, "his course tight against the cliffs of Scylla's lair...[where] the heads of Scylla... gobble up six of the sailors"(Spark Notes). Odysseus escapes Scylla but not without the loss of six of his sailors.
