My student asked me this question in the middle of our lesson. This was my toughest by far! Even some of us get this wrong! It's even tougher because I have to find a way to simplify it for a second language learner.

Instead of verbally explaining everything, which I thought would make my student even more confused, I chunked my explanation and used the chat box to guide him. Here's the pattern I worked with:

Their (pronoun)= to talk about something that BELONGS TO a group of people.

Examples:
Words: their car, their hat.
Sentence - My friends are out of town. So, I asked if I could borrow THEIR car.
To check: Whose car is it? THEIR = friends

It took a bit of time to explain all three concepts to him. I even let him create his own sentences after the examples. THANKFULLY this pattern worked well.

He kept thanking me before we end our lesson. Glad I was able to help!

I enjoy free conversation sessions because it's stress-free and you can talk about anything under the sun. The problem, however, is that it is very difficult to interact with a student who cannot pronounce words properly or his/her sentences cannot be understood well. While it's difficult to understand their responses to your questions, it is much more difficult to answer their questions especially when their inquiries are unclear and you don't understand completely what they are trying to say or ask you.

It wasn’t necessarily a question but a C2 Level student struggled to understand why his structurally accurate translations from his native language into English were not considered natural. His writing had strong grammar and syntax but lacked colloquial competence and contextual accuracy, which led to misunderstandings.

To address this, I commended his structural accuracy whilst emphasising the importance of enhancing their collocational competence and awareness of contextual nuances and connotations would substantially improve their overall communication and writing effectiveness.

I provided a list of simpler and more natural-sounding collocations and idioms, but the student was unreceptive to this feedback.

Ultimately, the student became agitated and insisted that I limit my corrections to verb tenses EXCLUSIVELY. Despite the persisting contextual awkwardness in his writing, I decided to respect his wishes and refrain from further intervention.

I simply answered it is a copy of a living thing (creature). But this explanation did nothing to clarify the question in the student's head and for a good 10 seconds or so, the student remained baffled. I further simplified it by stating an example, saying clone is a copy of same plant, or same animal, or same sheep (the infamous Dolly the sheep clone) and sent some links and images. After giving the student some time to absorb everything, he finally understood and had an aha moment. XD

Thus, it is crucial to read the material in advance, especially articles, to get the gist of the material's content and have enough time to review their meanings before the class starts. However, if there are unexpected words or phrases that are quite difficult for me to simplify in terms of meaning and usage, I delay the time for a bit by confirming the students questions while typing the meaning in the suggested online dictionaries. Sometimes the provided sample sentences in the dictionary are still complicated, so I construct my own easy sample sentences and have the students read them in the chatbox. After that, I allow the students to make their own sentences as well.

I cannot remember anything tough at the moment while answering this, so I will share the most recent question asked of me by my student, "What is embrace?" from the question I asked him from the material: "In your country, do you think students and their families will embrace this mandate? Why or why not? Discuss." My student then asked, "What is embrace?" I answered, "In this context, 'embrace' means 'to accept" such as an idea or an opinion."

Students ask about grammatical structures sometimes, and I explain in the simplest way I can in a way that is easy for them to understand, by using grammatical structures and patterns. When they see a grammatical structure in their material, they ask about another one, and I explain the differences between the two structures and their meaning. They seem to understand the structures better when they have a comparison of the differences.

Usually some of these sentences are using figure of speech that they cannot easily understand.

My student asked me what part of speech is healthy in the phrase eating healthy. I was not so sure about my explanation at first since it was also confusing in my part. At first, I answered an adjective but the student asked me if it's an adjective, why can't we say food healthy to healthy food? So, I immediately clarified my answer and changed it to adverb since it described the verb eating. Then, he asked another question saying why not used the adverb healthily for this one. So, as what I searched in the web, healthy is also used as an adverb. There, he accepted my explanation.

I provided various examples and emphasised that habits are defined by ongoing patterns of behaviour, she remained unconvinced because the question didn’t align with her preconceived notions of habit. Her argument possibly arose from her cultural background as a Japanese person, where people tend to replace their phones less frequently, resulting in a different understanding of “habits”, which I also pointed out but she was relentless.

I've come to realise that, no matter how diligently a tutor simplifies a concept, if a student is stubbornly rooted in preconceived notions, there may be no breakthrough in sight. Persistence and patience may not always pay off, and sometimes the best solution is simply moving on from the discussion.

Why are some words in English such as Sheep and Feedback remain the same even in plural form? That was a question that one of my students asked once. And I gave him a compliment straight away because his question was such a out-of-the-box question. My advice for him was to go to Google and try to find out as many words as possible which have the same form even in Plural, learn them and memorize them, and in terms of answering his question, I said, there are some things you just have to accept when learning a foreign language, and not to get confused in the details. For example, in French, the number "80", is quatre-vingts in French, which if you translate to English word to word, it is "4-20", for English speakers it doesn't make sense, but it's just one of those things we have to accept and apply. The simpler we program ourselves to absorb new knowledge, the quicker you will learn more things compared to others.

One of the toughest questions a student asked me was, “Why do we say ‘I have eaten’ instead of ‘I ate’ if both happened in the past?” To simplify it, I explained that “I ate” is used when you're talking about a specific time in the past, like yesterday at 6 PM, while “I have eaten” is used when the exact time isn’t mentioned, and the focus is on the result or experience. I gave this example:

I have eaten breakfast, so I’m not hungry now.

I ate breakfast at 7 AM.

By connecting grammar to real-life situations, students found it easier to understand.

Some of the toughest questions my students have asked me usually involve grammar rules that even native speakers find hard to explain, such as the difference between the present perfect and past simple, or why certain phrases are exceptions to the rules. Instead of giving long, technical explanations, I simplify them by using timelines, real-life examples, and comparisons to patterns they already know.
