Teachers can provide the text in the student's home language and in English so the student can understand the text and make connections. Using language specialists in the school as well is beneficial and doing research as a teacher about a student's home language will also help. Find connections to make with that student in their home language so they can understand the texts.

We think doing formal assessments a few times a year would be helpful for your knowledge, as well as to pass along to the student's next teacher. Some will need more frequent formal assessment, but it would be good for everyone to go through the process at beginning/middle/end of the year.

Talk to your colleagues about strategies that they use in their classroom with reading comprehension. Also frequently check in with students about their learning to see if they are understanding the content that you are teaching. Feedback is a great way to gage where students are at.

As a teacher, we have to learn to not be so hard on ourselves because there will be plenty of times something does not go as we planned. It is through our mistakes that we learn where to adjust for our students. Each group of students will be different and have different prior knowledge. We can never teach the strategies perfect but we can always come back to fix and add more to help our students understand.

Sometimes things are more of a 'guess and check' than an obvious answer. But actually ANALYZING assessments you conduct is SUPER important... after you give assessments, you need to go back and identify what the students' completion of the evaluation is telling you

When covering lessons as a whole group, doing a check in after to see wheree students are can help decide what groups to pull or if the teacher needs to go over it again for the whole group before.
