(a.k.a forced in to service)<br>He signed the Treaty of Ghent, ending the war in a stalemate and claiming the Oregon territory. <br><strong>Early Life: </strong><br>He grew up in Orange County, Virginia.<br>His father, James, was a successful farmer &amp; owned more than 3,000 acres od land and dozen of slaves.<br><strong>Final Years: </strong><br>Retired to his estate, Montepelier, in 1817.<br>He helped create the University of Virginia.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Years in Office: 1817 - 1825<br>Date of Birth: 4/28/1758<br>Date of Death: June 4, 1831<br>Political Party: Democratic-Republican<br><strong>Presidency:</strong><br>He acquired Florida by treaty with Spain.<br>He created the Monroe Doctrine.<br><strong>Early Life: </strong><br>He was the eldest of several children.<br>He enrolled at William &amp; Mary after his father died. <br><strong>Monroe Doctrine:</strong><br>On December 2nd, 1823, Monroe formally announced to Congress what would be the "Monroe Doctrine."<br>It stated that no European powers could settle in the Americas or it would recognized as an act of war.</div>]]></description>
