I completed this Mar 3, 2017 and I used conte, inks, and colored pencils. This project was nice because I was able to experiment with different with different medias and see how they all worked. I like how it came together with the overlapping. What was most difficult about this piece was outlining the face and ear and the lips. The lips were difficult because I didn't want them to look like a prune and have harsh lines in there. This was my first time drawing lips so if I were to do this again I would make the lines less harsh. This is an important step because it prevents the page from wrinkling. Then start sketching the arm on the right side of the page and refer to the reference photo to get an accurate drawing. Next draw a line across the bottom 1/3 of the page to start the wash for the sea. The technique I used is called wet on wet and it helps to blend all of the colors together. I added different shades of dark blues and purples. Then I swirled them to get a wave effect. Be sure to leave some light spaces because it's important to keep contrast. This project came out as one of my favorites because I enjoy using watercolor and liked the outcome. I spent the most time on the arm because I wanted to get the shading right. The hardest part was probably getting the right shade of color for the arm. My favorite part was the water at the bottom because I like painting washes of different colors.

I enjoyed using the different media in this piece. If I were to do this again I would try to make the sunset a bit smoother and use a wider variety of colors in it. It's important to make sure that for shading you darken the skin tone to create shadows. Some major areas to shade were the right side of the arm, the wrist, between the fingers, and around the fingernails.
