With the rise of cinema in the early 20th century the world of literature changed. Many movies started not as scripts, but instead as novels that were creatively transformed into moving pictures. Movies have the same literary elements and plot structure as their literary cousins.

Your goal for the discussion board is to watch your favorite movie and analyze it in a way that you may not have done before. You can look at the logos, ethos, and pathos; the rising action, conflict, climax, falling action, and resolution; character development, rhetoric or anything else that you feel is relevant to your favorite movie as a literary work.

Whenever I think of a movie I've seen that I first read in a book, I always remember The Outsiders. I never thought about comparing the movie and the book just because it never crossed my mind to do so. Although the movie and the book are similar in plot, I noticed that character development is much different. From what I remember about the book, it goes in depth with explaining character relationships. The movie skims over those details, as if they expect you to already know that. For example, you would expect Sodapop, Ponyboy's brother, to have a bigger role in the movie. In the book, his character is explained in great detail. We know that he is a peacemaker, always cheerful, and the most handsome of the three brothers. In the movie, the only thing we know is that he's one of the greasers.
In watching this movie again, I went into it pretending that I never read the book. Considering it was a long time ago, it was initially easy to do. In doing so, however, I couldn't help but remember the important details the book offered that the movie lacked. For this reason, I would recommend the book over the movie, or at least to read the book and then watch the movie to see some of the events come to life.

I have read a couple of books before watching the movie. Honestly, I have read fifty shades of grey and thought it was a very detailed book. It sounds funny, but after watching the movie I thought there was so much left out. They went through the movie way to fast that I was completely confused with what was going on. It was a jump from one scene to another. They also didn't go in depth with many of the characters, such as Mrs. Robinson. Maybe that is only because they couldn't fit every detail in. I have also read the Hunger Games, and like Gloria, The Outsiders. The Hunger Games was such great series, in my opinion. I believed the books and movies were fantastic. There was so much information given. I have not watched many movies that have books.
