An-Mei Hsu was a ghost, not an actual ghost but a someone that was never talked about. She didn't know a lot about her mother, she lived with Popo, her grandmother and her little brother. As days went on An-Mei became worried and she was more worried when Popo got sick. Popo told her to never say her mother's name it was a sign of disrespect. As Popo was getting sicker the more worried An-Mei was. When there was a funeral a man fell and An-Mei's brother started laughing and his aunt told him that he was like his mother. This is when An-Mei has a memory about her scar and her mother as she is remembering the pain and suffering from her past. Later on, she starts loving her mother because her mother cooked soup and cut a piece of flesh in the soup in order to try to cure Popo.

Lindo grew up and was forced to marry. She was once happy before she was forced. Once she was married to Tyan-yu, her life became miserable as she tried to please her mother-in-law. She comes up with a plan that gets her out of the arranged marriages, and leaves her as a free person. She was put in an arranged marriage, and used her cleverness to get out of it. She does this by making her new mother believe that this marriage was not meant to be, and say Tyan-yu's "real wife" is the servant girl.

June is the daughter Suyuan Woo. She chose to step away from the traditions of her family and believe in American traditions. Her mother saw potential in her daughter, even if it had to be forced. Suyuan saw how Waverly was, so June was forced to learn how to play the piano. June hated the her idea and played recklessly for her deaf teacher. She plays like this at the talent show where she realizes how bad she messed up. After the death of her mother, she had the piano and realized how it all connected. Her mind strengthens as she plays to music.

Rose is afraid to tell her mother of her failing marriage. Her mother had not wanted her to marry Ted because he was American. His mother also did not want them to marry because Rose would get in the way of his career. They married, but things got complicated as she would always have him choose even the most simple choices. She had lost trust in anyone just as her mother had in God, the day her brother drowned at the beach. She looks at the bible that her mother kept and written inside was the death of her brother.

Lena grew up believing the little things mattered. She soon saw the evil in things as her mother had. She was always curious, and her mother tried to fill her head with false information. She would hear arguing in the adjacent apartment from a mother and her daughter. The things that she was told as a child led her to believe the worse possible outcome. Her mother grew crazy as she lost her unborn child. She grew with hope as the daughter took her mother to the other side.
