Hinton develops theme by setting, characters and plot over the course of the text. Loss of innocence, the theme of the novel, is matured. Theme is developed through setting because of the situation they are in. Setting is a part of each conflict occurring and tests Ponyboy. Greasers are also always in risk of being jumped or hurt in the community of which they live in, but Ponyboy continues not to lose his innocence. Setting is also an important contribution toward the theme because Ponyboy enjoys the things such as sunsets that the other greasers don't appreciate the same. Theme is developed through character because each character's different personalities and pasts impact and display if they are innocent or have lost their innocence. For example, Dally, an important character in the novel, is characterized and depicted as tough. It explains, "cold with a hatred of the whole world"..."He was tougher than the rest of us--- tougher, colder, meaner,"(Hinton 10). Dally was so cold and icy and, because of the actions he carried out with hatred and the experiences he has been through which had shaped him into one no longer with innocence. Theme is developed through plot because each event and conflict Ponyboy had never lost his innocence. Dally for example, lost his innocence partially because throughout his life, he had seen so much and lost it to different situations. Ponyboy on the other hand, through each event, he chose to see goodness and also, didn't proceed to act like others may have.
