First anogregation of the 21st century, making George Bush the new U.S. president, confirmed by the Senate. This was important because it was the first of the century. The election took weeks to decide between George Bush and Al Gore. A hand recount was required in the state of Florida which would determine the new president of the United States.

On September 11th, 2001, Islamic hijackers hijacked 4 Boeing 767s. The first hijacked airplane hit the South Twin Tower, resulting in the collapse of said tower. Then the second hit the other tower with the same devastating results. The third hit the Pentagon and the 4th was taken down by passengers after being told on their phones by family and friends that they needed to do whatever possible to either get possession of the plane or take it down. The plane went down in a Pensyvllenia field. The only ones not to survive the crash were those who were on board the plane. If the plane that went down in Pensyvllenia had not been taken down by passengers its destination was the White house.

In tight security due to terrorism concerns, George Bush opened the Winter Olympic games in Salt Lake City, Utah. fortunately, with increased security, the Winter Games went off without any terrorism. The only real incident was in the closing ceremony.

Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia, all of which are former members of the Soviet bloc, joined NATO. By doing this, it would secure safety from Russia and other nations that would otherwise at a future date become hostile and attempt to reclaim the geography.

Nasa rocket re-entering Texas explodes, killing all 7 astronauts inside. Upon an investigation of the cause, it was determined that a piece of foam had come off the external tank and pierced the spacecraft's underwing. Thus causing the catastrophic explosion. After the explosion, NASA terminated the shuttle program in 2011.

The war in Iraq began after Baghdad was bombed because Iraq ignored the United Nations's orders to get rid of Saddam Hussein. The war was waged by U.S. British, Australian, and Polish forces. Eventually, after much fighting, Saddam Hussein was removed from office, and a more democratic government was installed with fair elections.

in 2004, two Mars rovers were sent to opposite sides of Mars to look for possible signs of water. the Mars rover Mer-B confirmed to NASA that the area it landed on, at one time had water on it.

Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast states causing havoc in cities like New Orleans. The levees that maintained the city suddenly broke, letting all of the water in. In the end, an estimated 1800 people died and the damage costed $125 billion.

A massive British petroleum-owned oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico 49 miles off of the coast of Louisiana exploded killing 11 workers. It killed all of the sea animals trying to reach the surface through it, making stuff like fishing more difficult. By the end, the amount of oil that was spilled was estimated by the government to be 4.9 million barrels. In the end, it cost a little over $75.2 Billion.
