Dissociative drugs are hallucinogens that cause the user to have a hallucination in an altered reality. Most of the ketamine sold on the street come from veterinarians' offices.  Ketamine is an odorless and tasteless drug that is snorted or swallowed. Ketamine is also considered as a "date rape" drug because it can be added to drinks without being detected and induces memory loss. Ketamine causing a loss of sensation and a loss of consciousness. It has been used to commit sexual assaults due to its ability to sedate and paralyze victims.

Schedule III drugs are approved for medical use, but abusing them may lead to moderate physical dependence or high psychological dependence. Possession of Ketamine is illegal and will lead to about 5 years in prison and fines of about $250,000. Second time offenders would be sentenced to 10 years in jail and a fine of $500,000.
Individuals that use Ketamine for rape are more severely punished, receiving sentences for 20 years in jail. A rapist that impairs the ability of their victim with Ketamine could be sentenced to life in prison.

When it was discovered, Ketamine was considered as a breakthrough for its ability to relieve pain, bring on sleep, and produce short-term memory loss in surgical patients. Doctors embraced the use of Ketamine in the operating room. 
Ketamine was first used on patients in 1970. The U.S. military also used the drug during the Vietnam War. With the increased use of Ketamine, people started to report unusual side effects, such as hallucinations. Some claimed that they met up with dead relatives and friends, talked to angels, and had out-of-body experiences. As a result, the medical use of ketamine dropped.
The use of hallucinogens skyrocketed in the 1970s, the era of social and political upheaval. Stories about ketamine attracted attention from drug users. Later, with the growth of the rave culture during the 1980s and 1990s, Ketamine resurfaced as a club drug and became popular among teens. Many veterinary clinics were robbed at the time, since Ketamine is difficult to make.
In 1995, ketamine was added to the DEA's Emerging Drugs List, stating that it is a threatening new drug for drug users. In 1999, ketamine became illegal and labeled as a Schedule III drug in the United States.
