In the article by Washington Post, adapted by Newsela staff, it is said that a YOLO attitude can be very good for the brain. The acronym YOLO mean, You Only Live Once. In other words, "YOLO" means that life can be too short so we all have to make the most of it. It's something humans seemingly have tried to remind each other since anyone could remember. The rapper Drake made the phrase become very popular when he released it in his famous song, "The Motto."

In 2011, YOLO went viral because many of the social media users knew how to take its use to new heights. Some people used this saying to legitimately describe very risky or daring experiences. For example, traveling alone to a foreign country, or even deciding against a traditional wedding and planning to elope, other users took it as an opportunity to use the acronym or an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word in order to describe even the most mundane experiences.

The Experiment

In the article they made an experiment to prove that a YOLO attitude can be good for the brain. In the experiment, they gathered two groups of undergraduate students at an American university. They then assigned them to one of two groups. They asked about 70 students to imagine that were having only 30 days left before they had to moving away. In the second group (control group) they put about 69 students together and told them to write about their activities over the same time period. At the end of the period, as well as for the two weeks afterward, they made every student fill out the exact same survey. The survey was mainly used to measure their satisfaction with life.

This particular study comes with a few warnings one might expect. The subjects were all college students, and in this case overwhelmingly white and female. It is an open question how much these findings carry over to all people.Researchers adds some data to near-universal beliefs about "making hay while the sun shines." Even before Drake, other artists and musicians came to the same conclusion about the importance of this mentality. Now it appears that science might prove them right.
