Mac Miller released his first studio album, "K.I.D.Z" at the age of 18. This project takes listeners on a nostalgic journey through his teenage years, as he explores topics of grief, self-discovery, and young love. This project is full of raw lyricism and youthful energy, which were two of the contributing factors that led to his massive exposure after it was released.

Blue Slide Park marks an incredible milestone for Mac Miller, as it was the first independently released album to top the US Billboard since 1995. In this project, Mac showcases his hometown pride, discussing various areas of Pittsburgh he would frequent as a youth. Many people see this as a "coming-of-age" album, as it explores many of the same themes as K.I.D.Z, but with a deeper understanding and a darker undertone. However, many people still view this album as "frat-rap," as a lot of the tracks still revolve around his lifestyle of partying and youthfulness.

"The Divine Feminine," is often seen as a departure from Mac Miller's previous work. This project is extremely vulnerable as he discusses his past relationships, intimacy, the human experience, growth, and struggle to communicate. This album's sound is largely inspired by soul and R&B music, creating an experimental sound that fans grew to love.

"Swimming," is perhaps Mac Miller's most personal album yet. In this project, you can sense Mac's hopelessness as he discusses loneliness, depression, and substance abuse in a raw and heartbreaking manner. He has the same genre-bending sound as previous projects, however it's more mature and polished than before. Mac's willingness to openly communicate his struggles to the world produced a wider fanbase who felt a personal connection to him.

Mac Miller originally intended "Circles," as a companion to "Swimming." However, after his tragic passing, his label chose to finish the project with the help of Mac's family, to release a posthumous album in a way that honors his legacy. The sound Mac creates in this album is a departure from his old sound, as it is primarily acoustic with raw vocals that allow you to feel his emotion. Although this album may be difficult for some to listen to as Mac discusses such deep, personal issues posthumously, many fans see this as a fitting tribute to his life and career.

Throughout his career, Mac Miller was open and honest about his struggles. He began struggling with substance abuse at a young age, but the fame and success he experienced later in life would accentuate this as he would use drugs to cope with the pressures of fame. However, Mac wanted to seek help and recovery and had several stints in rehab. Tragically, his turmoil had eventually become too much for him, leading to his tragic passing in 2018.

However, although Mac Miller openly struggled with addiction throughout his life, he likely wouldn't have passed had he not been laced with fentanyl. The investigation into his death uncovered a chain of individuals who supplied him with the narcotics, including Ryan Michael Reavis, Cameron James Pettit, and Stephen Andrew Walker. Reavis was sentenced to 10 years in prison, Walter was sentenced to 17, and Pettit's case is currently still pending.
