B.B.F.C. means British Board of Film Classification. Their role is to protect the public, especially children, from content which might cause harm and risks. They also empower the public, especially parents, to make informed viewing choices. They recognise and respect adult freedom of choice within the law. They work in partnership with the film industry to advise on guidelines. An example of a U rated film is; Toy Story 3. An example of a PG rated film is; Into The Spider-Verse. An example of a 12A rated film would be; Black Panther. An example of a 15 rated film would be; Ted. An example of a 18 rated film would be; 22 Jump Street. The Communications Act is the act passed in 2003 which states you have to promote equality in films or TV. An example of a negative representation of females would be the Persil ad from 1959 which showed females as frail and belonging in the kitchen. This can be seen as negative because it can make people think that it's all women are good for. A positive representation of females would be Wonder Woman, which showed them being strong but also elegant. This can be seen as positive because it shows people that women can be just as good as men. The Race Relations Act of 1976 is the law that states you can't discriminate against people because of their race or nationality. A negative representation of black people in film would be the characters in, Attack the Block because it shows them being aggressive and thuggish. This can be seen as negative because it can make people believe that all black people are thugs. A positive representation of black people would be the characters in Black Panther because it shows them being loyal to their allies and tribe, similar to that of their ancestors. This can be seen as positive because it can make people believe that black people are good people. The Human Rights Act - Article 9 means that you are allowed to have your freedom of thought, belief and religion as well as whether or not you want to change your religion. An example of a negative representation of the Islamic religion would be in the show, Homeland because it shows them being terrorists, murderers and extremists. This can be seen as negative because it can make people think that all Muslims are terrorists. An example of a positive representation of the Islamic religion would be; 7 British Questions Muslims where they are tired of hearing which shows them as just normal people that do their own thing. This can be seen as positive because it shows them being joking and friendly.

Ofcom is the government approved regulatory and competition authority that is in charge of making sure that broadcasting, telecommunications and postal industries of the United Kingdom. An example of a show that has had trouble with Ofcom would be; The Grand Tour because it was originally supposed to be named Gear Knobs but was later changed to The Grand Tour after an Ofcom official told them that they can't call it that. Another example of a show that was in trouble was Celebrity Big Brother because of the allegation of physical abuse made by Roxanne Pallett against Ryan Thomas.

ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) is the self-regulatory organisation of the advertising industry in the United Kingdom. An example of a advert that has been band would be, a payday loan advert by Pounds to Pocket because it encouraged taking out a short-term loan for frivolous spending, and promoted the process of borrowing as trivial. Another example of this would be a Heinz beans advert because it promotes neglects to health and safety.

The watershed is what time a show goes on, specifically whether or not it goes on after or before 9pm. Before 9pm the shows that are shown are stuff like Eastenders because it's a soap opera with some comedic content to make the violence less graphic and serious. After 9pm the show that are shown are stuff like Luther with compelling stories, a well-established series and graphic violence.

Copyright law is a law that means that someone can't use their ideas, footage, pictures or song lyrics/tunes unless you have clearance (permission to use it), or it's fair use such as education, parody and reviews. Copyright can be used in the media sector with the news because when they show a picture or video they have to ask permission to show it. Websites that breach copyright law would be the majority of steaming sites, such as 123 movies because they show footage that neither belong to them or were given permission to use. TV shows and other media outlets have to be mindful of people's privacy because it's illegal to take another persons data without permission from them. Libel law is a law that means you can sue a media outlet if they ruin your reputation. An example of a television show, which has been guilty of breaking libel law would be, Who is America and damaging a senators reputation by making it seem as if he was a paedophile. In the Joanna Yeates case where she was murdered, Christopher Jefferise was wrongfully accused. Christopher Jefferise was a land lord of Joanna Yeates who rented and lived in one of his properties. After he has accused the media said that he was wired, strange and dangerous. After the case was solved Christopher Jefferise was on a documentary where he said what is was like for him when he was accused of the murder with how people treated him and how he had to live.
