At first, Professor Aronnax is hostile towards Captain Nemo and his actions, but as he spends more time on the Nautilus, he comes to understand and respect Nemo's motivations and even starts to sympathize.

Why we think Prof Arronax is the protagonist of the story is because he is the narrator and the story is from his point of view. Anti-hero- Captain Nemo first saves and then imprisons Dr Pierre Aronnax, his servant, Conseil, and the Canadian harpooner Ned Land.
