I am a general teacher working with early years children (4-5 year olds). The school setting is a primary (IB PYP) school in the UAE. There are 1200 students ranging from 3 years to 11 years. Over the last year, more provision for children with additional learning needs has started to be addressed more consistently across the school. Working in an early years classroom I have been fortunate to work with two teaching assistants (with a class of 25 students). Communication is key in developing a successful curriculum and programme that can be accessed by all the students. Regular meetings - sometimes formal, other times informal, are so valuable in sharing ideas about what works / doesn't work with each individual student. Working with young children often means that we are the adults who are identifying the children's learning needs and if necessary, involving specialist teachers in developing an appropriate programme for that student to succeed. A working relationship with each child's parents is essential in helping their child move forward. Understanding their home background & cultural diversity plays such an important part. So, communication (both speaking and listening, collaboration and cooperation with all team players is essential when having a shared interest of helping each child to succeed whilst having fun at school.

We have a doctor, a psychologist in our school and teachers, who the students can talk to if needed and the class room asistence. Sometimes we would need more rooms or smaller groups. Very important, as they said in the videos before, is the importance of communication, feedback, openess between the staff and the mind set. I can understand that is could be weird having another teacher in the class at first, but things change and we should be open for news or changes and give it a try. I like the idea of the buddy system and we have it in our school (younger and older, social peers) and I can imagine that could be useful with SEN students. Last year that happened without being discussed before, because a girl was so nice and just did it.

You can collaborate in different ways, but I think that co-teaching is the best one. Each student sees general and special education teacher as equal and there are no differences between them. Of course, you have to talk and to share and to decide lesson plans together.

I also have the title of special support teacher and I have been doing this highly educational experience for 7 years. I firmly believe that the teacher is a cultural mediator, whose task is to transmit knowledge in compliance with ministerial programs using them as tools for guiding the educational goals that society asks.
The role of the teacher is therefore fundamental in the cultural and emotional growth of all students, including those with learning difficulties. It is therefore indispensable the collaboration between teachers of general and special education to achieve an effective teaching. Only through teamwork, where culture, educational tools, trust, esteem and consensus are put into play, can a climate be created to develop the right learning.

In our school some SEN children have support assistants assigned directly to them (individual support), but the idea (and, more important, practise) about SEN coteachers for different subjects in curriculum assignet to whole school is just genious. There is no shame, no stigma or- no exclusion of SEN child, there is only help and support to all children and the mainstream teacher as well. Totally universaly designed!
I'd talk to the assistants that are already in the classroom would they like to be support teachers for everybody in the class, and ask them would they help me to improve my plan according to the capacity of given SEN student, but in the same time accordingly to all children. I think they would accept.
I am very, very thrilled with the idea ;-)!

If a general teacher knows, has planned what to do with the class, he/she will be able to say which objective he/she wants to reach by that learning unit. Consequently, I have not a long teaching experience. Despite this, I had some positive experiences in terms of cooperation with general teachers with whom I was able to plan some activities for all students in the classroom. Two years ago, I taught in a classroom where we had many different educational needs and it was very difficult for my general colleagues to face this situation. I proposed many strategies, and one of this was the alternate co teaching for some students who needed to improve their skills in English, as I’m also an English teacher, and this was a very successful experience as students were more involved and improved their way to approach difficulties but also to solve them. Furthermore, SEN teachers should have a restricted field of competences, I mean that they cannot provide support for any discipline but only for those they have specific competences.

I have really loved the video on co-teaching and I believe that this is the best way to face nowadays educational challenges. It should become the ways schools organise their staff and methodology and not just the sporadic initiative of a good will teacher.

I am a general/mainstream teacher in an upper secondary school in central Italy, in particular I am an English teacher and my pupils are from 14 to 19. In all my classes there are from 2 up to 5 or 6 SEN pupils. Each one has got its personalized “learning contract”, an agreement between school-family and medical equipe. Sometimes my pupils have got an assistant and a support teacher but, if their diagnosis is not too severe, they just have their general teachers. I can say that the staff often meets to focus on SEN pupils, yet it is not enough. We would certainly need more time to plan, share stories as well as methodologies. Moreover we should be in closer contact with their families and know more tools to facilitate their learning and give them more educational opportunities. Last but not least I would like to increase co-teaching in order to build up a more inclusive school where cooperation is the class routine, everyone is valued, and granted the chance to get the highest learning achievements.

I'm a support teacher. in my school we collaborate through an exchange of opinions and planning together. Sometimes the relationship is very difficult because in some cases colleagues think that I should provide answers to solve problems of some children in particular with behavior problems. The point is, however, that very often some problems can not be solved unless faced by everyone. Sometimes perhaps the hardest thing is to accept that there is a problem and that it will not be solved right away.

I'm a general teacher and I think collaboration among teachers in general is fundamental for effective teaching for all students. Unfortunately it's often difficult to realize "on a systematic basis". In secondary schools each class has about 10 teachers who teach different subjects and who meet all together about once a month/two months to discuss and analyze
the situation of the class, the behaviour and the results of each students. In my opinion that's no enough for a real collaboration because we should have more time to plan together, to share our observations, to work together. Moreover, we don't have enough SEN teachers and specialized educators. They are provided only for SEN students and only for a few hours a week while SLD students (students with dyslexia, ADHD, etc) are left "alone", only with the help of the general teacher. They have an individual learning plan but it is carried on only by the general teacher who, very often, has in his/her class at least 3/4 students with SLD and no help or possibility of co-presence with other teachers of the class: too little to realize effective cooperation and inclusive practices.

Anyway, I think that two teachers who collaborate can reach more students. For example one teacher can see the work of the other teacher from a different point of view, so, if they communicate, they can help each other to plan more effective activities for students and learn new things from the colleague. Plus, it's better to have 2 teachers when the students are like 25/30.

I must say that in recent years in Italy it is very difficult to find a special teacher (we call it support) really specialized, trained and adequate. It seems to me that there is a big gap in the training of specialized teachers especially for LSD students. Very often these young teachers ask for advice from me or colleagues with a little more experience. Furthermore, it seems to me that they do not have a true and complete formation on pathologies, on non-traditional teaching techniques. Very often I see that they sit close to the pupil and simply help him to complete the work assigned to the other students. Although rarely, I have nevertheless had the opportunity to work with very competent support insiders with whom we could collaborate, interact and find alternative ways of working to improve everyone's inclusion and learning. My expectation is that all teachers, class and support, are more scientifically and didactically prepared.

I have often worked with the special education teacher, in class with me.
I think the most important thing is the collaboration between the teacher of general class the teacher teacher of special education, if there is agreement and collaboration will be a benefit for SEN students
I too seldom have the opportunity to work with very competent support staff to work together, interact and find alternative ways of working to improve everyone's inclusion and learning.
it is very difficult to find a special teacher who is really specialized, prepared and adequate and I agree with my colleague Dina, Verona, Italy when he says that "I think there is a big gap in the training of specialized teachers, especially for LSD students. Very often these young teachers ask for advice from me or colleagues with a little more experience, and they do not seem to have a true and complete training on pathologies, on non-traditional teaching techniques.
I am a special education teacher. I just want to state that not always there is collaboration between the general teacher and the SEN teacher. Some of them just want the student be quiet and doesn't make noise. It seems something like " it is your business". Fortunately not the general teachers are like that but it is really disappointing!

I'm social educator. I work with students with special needs. I carry social lessons for them. First of all, in order to make things wrong, you need to be confident in your student, and the student must trust his teacher. Then things are much easier. Collaboration is one of the most important things for working with children. It is necessary to cooperate with both teachers and teachers and with various institutions.

At the beginning of the school year I get a brief instruction from the school pedagogue about every SEN student and according to these instructions I have to draw up a curriculum for each student. I have to do the initial assessment of the student and make a support plan for each student. The problem is that there are more and more such students every year. In the classes we have 20 students of which 3 SEN. To have less pupils in the classroom, to have the working conditions in my school better, to have the help of SEN specialists, it would be easier for me.

I think that the collaboration between general and specialized teachers is fundamental: together we plan the lessons and organize the materials and this helps all the students, not just those SEND, to achieve the best results. Unfortunately, collaboration is not always possible when the mainstream teacher is 'jealous' of the class or when the specialist teacher thinks he is only the teacher of the SEND pupil and not of the whole class. In my classroom I have from 20 to 28 (sometimes even more) students, and unfortunately we do not have a special education teacher. I would like to have one in the classes where I have SEN students. Also I would like to collaborate more with other teachers from my school who has SEN students, to exchange experience, thoughts and approach. In this little cooperation we have on this occasion most teachers only feel frustrated and incompetent. I wish we are all more open in my school for challenge that we have with including SEN students. And the most important that we educate ourselves on this topic.

As a SEN teacher, I think, building a collective and / or collaborative work is a great challenge in most Portuguese schools. Teachers have become accustomed to individual work and, moreover, we have not been given time or space for joint planning.
So in our schools we must:
- Organize the times in order to privilege the interaction between the teachers;
- Work together in the classroom with the students;
- Authentic collective work without dispute among teachers; there must be a sharing of the potential of each teacher.

I must say that most of the support teachers in my school are very collaborative, which is great, as I believe that collaboration, not just with the special teacher, but with all the class teachers, is crucial if we want to achieve good results. When I happened to have a SEN student (and his/her support teacher) in my class, my colleague and I exchanged ideas, shared opinions about the most effective strategies to use, the best activities or exercises to give the student, I gave him/her materials to choose from and we arranged the contents of the student’s lessons. It worked out great. I acknowledge that not all the general teachers want or feel the necessity of having such a relationship of mutual support and collaboration with the special teachers and, in general, with the other class teachers. What's more, we have such a high number of students in each class that it is hard to find extra time to spend for one student alone. And even when there are formal meetings of the teachers’ staff, we have so many issues to discuss of, that there is always very little time left to talk about teaching strategies for one single student. I agree with Graça who says that “everyone is so busy with their classes and duties that collaboration constitutes a challenge”. It really is. So, most of the times, my colleagues and I exchange information, suggestions and ideas before or after the lesson, during the break, or when we meet in the teachers’ room or in the school corridors. To conclude, I think that what we lack is more time to devote to the planning of activities and teaching strategies for our SEN students and a teachers’ more open-minded attitude towards collaboration.

I am a general education teacher, but I have SEN students every year (and the number seems to be increasing). My first big experience with SEN students was when I became responsible for a secondary class with two autistic students (one Asperger). I really struggled because I felt that neither other students in class, nor most teachers and parents were sympathetic with the students' situation even refusing themselves (teachers) to apply the measures to which students had legal right. This was why I decided to attend a course which made me a qualified SEN teacher. Today I still haven't worked (only) as SEN teacher, but I have SEN students every year, am back working in the same school and I feel that things are different, but there is still a long way to go in collaborative work. At the beginning of the year we learn from the psychologists and SEN staff what kind of adaptations teachers have to do to the way they teach and then we do it as best as we can. I feel that it is pretty much it, really. There isn't much collaboration between general teachers and SEN teachers. So, I also expect from this course that governments can be given some guidelines on supplying time and better conditions for people to work better for inclusion.

However, I believe that we should have more special education teachers who can actively help general teachers in the class. Also, the assistant teachers who help some students individually in the class should be more trained. Even if a SEN student has an assistant in the class, it is usually the general teacher who needs to simplify or repeat the instructions for the student and help with the differentiated work. The assistant teachers should know more about the subject we teach.

Twice a week I get support from a special education teacher. At our school the collaboration between different teachers is very important.

This is actually the first time I'm taking the time to learn a little bit more about inclusive classrooms and different methods to approach children with SEN. Despite all of this, I've had several SEN students in my classroom and to be honest I felt I was being left alone to deal with this challenge. I think the way could be team work and having teacher work more often with other teachers and specialised ones as they can spread their knowledge and techniques and improve school environment. Collaborating with other people can be successful if every part takes time to listen and think about the global aim and not themselves.

I teach several classes with SEN students but not all of them have an assistant in the class. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with all different needs of my students and I would really appreciate if someone was there to co-teach with me. Constant education and collaboration on how to achieve the objectives set for SEN students would be of great help. I miss the group planning in my school.

I am an English Foreign language teacher in a primary school. I have got two classes and teach each class for ten hours. I have got two SEN students. We work collaboratively with the SEN coordinator and meet regularly. We discuss the plans, activities and exams for SEN students with the coordinator which is very helpful. My SEN students have assistant teachers “shadow teachers” and they are very supportive. One of the SEN teachers is a trained teacher and is very helpful during lesson time and outside classroom. However, the other assistant teacher has not a qualification as a teacher and is just there to look after the student. She is very helpful for the student’s basic needs; however, she can’t give the same support during lesson time. That’s why parents need to be more careful about choosing an assistant teacher for SEN students. This person must be trained as a SEN teacher (We face problems in teaching styles/ approaches/ perspective). The mainstream teacher prepares all the plans, activities and exams. It would be much more effective to have more SEN teachers at school and give teachers set time in their schedules for SEN planning.

I teach in the 3rd class of primary school, for 6 years I have been a teacher of support for autistic children and children with hearing loss. Since I became a class teacher I have always had children with difficulties and I have always been sensitive to exclusivity. What amazed my colleagues, teachers of support, was that I planned with them the exchange of roles and I was actively interested in the pupils. Now in the class where I work there are dyslexic, dysgraphic children, and also an Albanian girl inserted this year who does not know Italian and English at all ... I do not take advantage of the help of a supporting colleague, there are hours of coexistence but few. I try to motivate them and interest them as best I can with inclusive platforms like etwinning, small group work, circle time, coding
However, whatever the difficulties slowly it is always good to try to keep in mind the obtribes set and reach them slowly
http://svel.to/106v

They are being prepared for daily / adult life and spend most of the time in a classroom where is possible to make different activities. I'm not refering to learning disabilities but to severe learning or physical ones. We are two teachers in the same room, but we make different groups according to their abbilities, interests and subjects being taught. Having a colleague there all the time allows us to share practices, materials, ask for the other opinion about activities that are being prepared, students needs, evolution, etc.

I am a special education teacher. The biggest change for educators is in deciding to share the role that has traditionally been individual: to share the goals, decisions, classroom instruction, responsibility for students, assessment of student learning, problem solving, and classroom management. The teachers must begin to think of it as "our" class. But from my experience is necessary to replace the current model based on the support of the disabled person being provided exclusively by the support teacher, in favour of a model of “broad support” given by the class teachers, peers, other figures (e.g. educators, assistants), auxiliarystaff (janitors, canteen staff, etc.), and through the organization of the classroom, via aids, etc. This aspect is too relevant with general teachers who do not believe they have adequate training to face an educational dialogue with the pupil. Further difficulties arise if one considers the specialist teachers as “the” teachers of the students with disabilities, or think that they are less skilled and have fewer abilities than general teachers or if these same specialists are helping to adhere, to a “medical model” that requires them to claim sole responsibility for caring for the student, as holders of specific technical skills, thus, isolating themselves withinexclusive relationships in order to “heal” the students.

In more developed countries, the school hires teacher assistants working in class with the teacher. It is very important that there is good communication and preliminary planning of work between the teacher and the assistant. However, the presence of an assistant during classroom classes may be an inhibiting element for the student with special requirements who may have detentions in active participation in classes if the lessons are not organized so that each student feels part of it of the class group.
and in Romania this is done, but at a much lower level, the specialized staff being insufficient.

At the moment, in Portugal, there is still a strong negative reaction to the presence of students with great barriers, in the classroom. The teachers are exhausted, discouraged, with a great workload and few conditions and ... I fear the unknown also weighs heavily. However, from my experience I can say that some way has been made. For this, there has to be a great team spirit, collaboration, positive thinking, resilience and calm. As cost to say there is no impossibility and we have to try to give our best. In this ambience I have been able to mobilize several teachers and carry out work that is gratifying for all and especially beneficial to the student. It is a continum work that requires a lot of dialogue and reflection on what was done and what is appropriate to do the next day. I think the great barrier we have is the lack of teachers, as they are asking us to build an inclusive school, but we have fewer and fewer teachers and bureaucratic requests continue to grow. And it creates the exhaustion and the discouragement. But everything happens when we are with the student.

She stated how her experience of good collaboration was based on the sharing of responsibilities in order to reach the different goals. She also highlighted the importance of good communication between the teacher and parents in order to manage parents expectations. It seems to me that being considerate towards others is one of the most important factors to collaboration.
