There is a preschool child in Room 2 with behaviors that challenge Adults. Sometimes, to give the staff a break, the Director takes the child in the office to look at catalogs, and use the hole puncher while the teachers are doing their small groups with children. The child stays with the Director for about 30-45 minutes. Is this considered a Suspension/Expulsion? Why or why not?

A couple of days a week, when one particular child is running around the toddler classroom and is unable to be calmed down, if there are enough staff to maintain the ratio, one staff person will take the child outside for 20-30 minutes while the rest of the children are inside doing activities. Is this considered a Suspension or Expulsion? Why or why not?

A boy just enrolled in preschool class and the parent shared that the child was previously on an IFSP and receiving ABA services in the home. The child turned 3 and IEP is for speech only. Mom is very concerned because her child has very little language and has never been in school before. The child's first week of school was rough, the child cried every day. At drop off today, Mom asked for staff to call her if the child didn’t stop crying after 30 minutes. The child stopped crying for 20 minutes when engaged in water play. Mom calls an hour later and can hear the child crying in the background. She asks if she should come and pick him up because she doesn’t want the staff to have to deal with him crying. You tell the parent that it is her choice whether to pick up the child or not. Mom comes and picks up the child from school for the day. Is this considered a Suspension or Expulsion? Why or why not?

A child has started in the full day and doesn’t want to sit or lay down on her mat during naptime. The child would stay on the mat for 30 minutes with books or puzzles but would continue to leave the mat and use loud tones when asking to go outside and would run around the children that were napping, often waking them up. Teacher shared with the parents that their child is hurting others during naptime. Parents decided to pick up their child after lunch due to her not napping. Is this considered suspension or expulsion? Why or Why not?

We don't believe this to be expulsion. We think we need to respect the parents request, however, staff and family can develop strategies for success of a longer day and staff can send updates regarding the child's success; for example through learning genie.
