My name is Jaynee Martinez and I am a senior currently attending Animo Inglewood Charter High School. I'm preparing to research the Negative Impact of Fast Food on Public Health and Society. I will be comparing the nutritional facts of a "healthy" burger from In-and-Out to other normal fast food burgers. Is it really healthy or just like any other burger?

5 key takeaways:

One key takeaway I got from the article was how the prices ranges, the protein style ranges from about $2-$5. Which is pretty expensive for one singular burger, but it's typically $5 because of what you add on the protein style burger.

I was surprised about how little calories the protein style burger had. It was only 240 calories, I thought it would be at least in the 300s because of the protein.

Also the amount of protein it has is 13 grams of it. The fat content is approximately 17 grams, which is way higher than the protein. But its also a better option for those who are mindful of the calorie intake and still want to enjoy the food.

This burger is a convenient option for those on keto diets but also anyone seeking low-carb fast food. I was surprised about how much the calories go up when you add cheese.

Adding cheese makes the calories approximately go up to 520 calories. It also has 33 grams of protein, which is a good option for people who are doing bodybuilding.

Article #1, "In-n-Out Protein Style Guide for 2025" by Cozymeal relates to the topic, "The Negative Impacts of Fast Food on Public Health and Society". The pricing of the Protein Style burger usually ranges from $2-$5 depending on what you put on it, this could have a negative impact on public health and society because of the higher cost for healthier options. While most of In-N-Out's menu is relatively affordable, specifically their burgers. Choosing a protein style burger does cost more than opting for a normal burger. According to the article, "The price of In-N-Out Protein Style burgers typically ranges from $2.85 to $5.65 depending on the specific variation and topping you choose." The pricing of the protein style burger can discourage healthier eating choices, especially for those who are a part of the lower class and are trying to find healthier options for food.

Another thing that was mentioned in article #1 was, "A standard protein style burger with one patty contains approximately 240 calories." This was a big surprise to me because the protein style burger is 10 less calories than the classic burger from McDonald's, which is 250 calories. The Protein Style burger is the healthier choice because it's only 240 calories, contains 11g of carbs, 13g of protein and the fat content is approximately 17g. Compared to the Classic Burger from McDonald's which is 250 calories, 12g of protein, 30g of total carbs, and 9g of total fat. The Protein Style burger has less carbs and fat compared to the classic burger from McDonald's. Even if we were to compare the classic burger to the double protein style burger, it's still a healthier choice but has more calories (520 cals). The protein style burger is significantly lower in carbs since it's wrapped in lettuce, which is beneficial to those who are on a diet.

In Article #2 containing the nutritional facts of the Classic Burger from McDonald's, there are several ways that the nutrition of the burger can negatively impact public health and society. While it may be affordable, McDonald's rarely offers healthy options for those who are seeking to eat healthier at an affordable price. Since McDonald's is affordable, people usually tend to eat there because of its affordable options, this can contribute to obesity and chronic diseases. According to the article, there are 30g of total carbs contained in the classic burger. Due to the high levels of unhealthy fats, carbs, and sodium regular consumption of the processed fast food can lead to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

The Classic burger may be cheap but it is not a healthier option compared to the In-N-Out Protein Style Burger. According to the article, while it may have 250 calories, which is less compared to other options on the menu. The classic burger contains a lot of fat and carbs compared to the protein style burger. The article mentioned that there were no artificial flavors, preservatives, or added colors from artificial sources present in the burger. However, while that may be true McDonald's processed food is still linked to health diseases such as heart disease. McDonald's is more seen in low-income communities because it's cheap, convenient, and heavily marketed in those areas. This makes it harder for those who live in low-income areas to adopt a healthy lifestyle/diet because it reinforces the consumption for high fat, high sugar, high sodium meals.

Reflection Questions?

One new skill I developed during the project was taking out key points from the article and putting them into a summary. This skill can be applied to projects that are due within a week, you can easily get the main points out of the article and summarize them. Or reading an article and having to answer questions that are due within the same day. With this skill you can easily find and summarize the main points of the article. While also being able to answer the questions and getting the assignment done within the same day.

Something that surprised me about my topic is how expensive it is choosing healthy options, healthier choices. I understand now why people choose eating processed foods over healthier options because it's cheaper. The In-n-Out burger can cost up to five dollars depending on what you put on it, while the McDonald's burger is more cheaper only costing $2.19. Which is a way cheaper option and that is why people lean towards McDonald's more so than In-N-Out. If there were healthier options available at a cheaper price, I'm sure that this would motivate and benefit the lower class who are trying to eat healthy.
