This story happens in a poor Fresno California neighborhood. The narrator's house is near Old Dikran's ordinary neat house, who has a lovely garden.

I think the author wrote this text to show that every effort, as small as it is, always helps. I think this, because at the end of the story, Old Dikran points to a group of hummingbird saying that each of the hummingbirds is their birds, that they saved them all.

I infer that he assumes, the bird reproduced, and those are the offspring. Because without saving the parent, none of them would be there. Maybe the saved bird even showed them the house, knowing safety was within.

The climax happens when the narrator pours the honey into Old Dikran's hand, and wait until the bird shows life. This leads to the resolution, because when the bird starts flying, you know he is okay, and will be let go soon.
