Stems in cactus are comparatively thicker than other plants, hence it is able to store water in stems – specifically in collapsible water-storage cells. The stems can also expand considerably to store more water. They are green and perform photosynthesis.

They are native to the Americas, ranging from Patagonia in the south to parts of western Canada in the north, with the exception of Rhipsalis baccifera, which is also found in Africa and Sri Lanka. Cacti are adapted to live in very dry environments, including the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth.

The stem of a cactus helps it survive due to its thickness and ability to store water for long periods of time. With this growth, plants are more stable, and they are provided with nutrients they may not otherwise have. Plants with taproots are found in various areas, but the most notable region is the desert. Many plants in the desert rely on the long roots to help them reach water deep in the ground. As mentioned above, taproots are important to a plant because it anchors them, and keeps the plant upright and stable. Its deep roots also allow it to transport minerals and water to the stem that would be otherwise unreachable. Some notable plants with a taproot system are Carrots, Parsnips, Turnips, and Dandelions.

Desert roots are a very interesting adaptations. They are shallow, widespread roots that absorb as much water as possible. Plants with this adaptation live in a very dry, desert area. This helps the plant survive because it rarely rains in a desert, and when it does the pants there need to soak up as much water as possible. One plant that has this is a saguaro cactus.

Cactus roots help the plant survive by collecting rainwater on the surface and water deep underground. Plants with cactus roots live in mainly desert environments. This helps the plant survive because deserts get little amount of rainfall. Cacti usually have this type of root. -Dylan B
