The troops needed a constant supply of new tanks, weapons, planes, ships, bombs, and other manufactured goods.The total manpower available to the Russian and American allies was far greater than the limited manpower of Germany and Japan. Allied military production far exceeded Axis production, even without the heavy losses in military production due to the Allie bombing. British and American losses during the war were a fraction of those suffered by Germany, Japan, and the USSR, and this, in turn, made it easier to persuade democratic populations to keep fighting even in periods of crisis and stalemate.

Many people believe that the Normandy landings marked the beginning of the end of the European war. The Battle of Normandy was effectively over by the end of August 1944 when the Allies reached the Seine River, freed Paris, and drove the Germans out of northwest France. After that, the Allied forces planned to advance into Germany, where they would encounter Soviet forces advancing from the east.
