This map details the territories lost and gained throughout the years of WWII. The different colors represent the different sides of the war. The site describes WWII as the most widespread conflict in human history, stating that "major battles on three continents and some of the largest naval engagements in history." This map is useful because it gives us a visual understanding of the war as a whole, as well as, the extent at which battles took place, lives were lost, and territory was gained and lost.

But on July 10, the French Parliament voted to give power to the Nazi-friendly regime under former general Philippe Pétain. Although that sovereignty ended in November, 1942 when the Nazis occupied the rest of France. When France lost its sovereignty, they collaborated with the Nazis, including participation in the persecution of Jews.

The Germans encircled the city and starved its inhabitants, with the worst month being February 1942 when more than 20,000 people died. The Soviets succeeded in building the "Road of Life," a route across the frozen Lake Ladoga, which allowed some provisions to be brought into the city and some civilians to be sent out. The city remained under siege for more than two years before the Red Army finally drove the Nazis out.

This gave the defenders the opportunity to launch their own pilots to stop the attackers. The British had significantly superior methods for integrating radar intelligence to inform tactical decisions than the Germans did, despite the fact that the Germans had their own radar equipment.

the combined economic output of the Allies was roughly twice that of the Axis powers. And that was crucial because World War II was the most mechanized war in history up to that point. The troops needed a constant supply of new tanks, weapons, planes, ships, bombs, and other manufactured goods. The total manpower available to the Russian and American allies was far greater than the limited manpower of Germany and Japan. Allied military production far exceeded Axis production, even without the heavy losses in military production due to the Allie bombing. British and American losses during the war were a fraction of those suffered by Germany, Japan, and the USSR, and this, in turn, made it easier to persuade democratic populations to keep fighting even in periods of crisis and stalemate.

In 1943, the Western Allies still doubted they were strong enough for a direct assault on the Germans in France. So they attacked the Italian Peninsula instead. They hoped to knock the Italians out of the war, leaving Germany to fight the Allies alone. An amphibious assault on Italy began in September 1943. While the Allies did make progress up the Italian peninsula, it was too slow to play a decisive role in the outcome of the war. The British and Americans were still working their way north nine months later when they opened up another front with an amphibious landing in France.

This battle began on June 6, 1944, it was also known as D-day when over 156,000 American, British, and Canadian troops descended at five beaches situated around a 50-mile stretch of the heavily defended Normandy coast of France. The invasion required careful planning because it was one of the biggest amphibious military operations in history. The Allies ran a significant deception campaign ahead of D-Day to trick the Germans about the invasion's intended aim. In late August 1944, all the northern France has been liberated and the Allies had vanquished the Germans by the following spring. Many people believe that the Normandy landings marked the beginning of the end of the European war. The Battle of Normandy was effectively over by the end of August 1944 when the Allies reached the Seine River, freed Paris, and drove the Germans out of northwest France. After that, the Allied forces planned to advance into Germany, where they would encounter Soviet forces advancing from the east.

The majority of French troops evacuated to Dunkirk opted to join the Free French, led by Charles de Gaulle. Over the next few years, de Gaulle and his troops fought alongside the Allies, wresting control of France's colonial possessions away from the Vichy government and building up de Gaulle's legitimacy in the eyes of the French people. De Gaulle's military victories deprived Hitler of resources while strengthening his legitimacy.

Japan established a puppet state called Manchukuo in Manchuria in 1932 and sent planes.

The Bataan Death March was an atrocity during World War II in the Philippines. It was a 3-month siege by the Japanese, which took 75,000 prisoners, including 10,000 American troops. The prisoners were then forced to march 65 miles up the peninsula to San Fernando, where they boarded railcars bound for a prisoner-of-war camp. Japanese troops beat the prisoners, denied them food and water, and executed stragglers, costing hundreds of American lives and several thousand Filipinos. A Japanese general who oversaw the Philippines campaign was tried for war crimes and executed in 1946.

In 1938 Hitler annexed Czechoslovakia. The map shows the number of German speaking people in each judicial district of Czechoslovakia, and you can see that there are many. In the northwest of Germany there were many German speaking people and this gave Hittler the idea that Czechoslovakia should be part of Germany and this caused many of these regions to feel threatened and to have political crises. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain met with Hittler in Munich in 1938 to discuss the crisis, at this meeting an agreement was made that Chamberlain would let Hittler take over Czechoslovakia only if Hittler would stop taking over the territories of the others, but in the end Hittler did not keep his promise.

As it became clear he wasn´t goimg to be able to destroy the Royal Air Force, Hitler switched strategies and began bombing British cities an event that became known as the Blitz. Thanks to the Bomb Sight Project you can see an interactive map of bombs dropped on London between October 7, 1940 and June 6, 1941. These attacks took a heavy toll, with as many as 43,000 British civilians killed and 139,000 injured. And those Londoners not directly touched by tragedy were profoundly affected by having to spend many long uncomfortable nights in bomb shelters.
