Hi Everyone! My name is Lauren and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I go by Ms. Lauren in the classroom. This is my 5th year teaching. I taught in Vietnam for a couple of years and in Brooklyn for a couple of years as well. Last year I taught 1st Grade at the charter school I have been working at in Brooklyn. This year I am teaching 2nd Grade at the same school.

One thing that brought me joy recently was seeing most of the students in my class this year in-person (we started school on 8/26)! I am looking forward to getting more practice weaving intentional language instruction into my lessons in a sustainable way. One thing I am nervous about is balancing grad school with teaching in-person full-time. Up until this point, work has been either fully remote or hybrid, which has given me more time to work on grad school assignments. Now that I am back teaching fully in-person, I will have less time outside of work and will need to adjust my schedule accordingly.

Ciao a tutti! Benvenuti! My name is Jessica Schiffman, or my students call me Ms. Schiffman. My mom is Ms. Schiffman, too, and she teaches ESL! Talk about twinning!

I have taught Italian and Spanish for 5-years. I have run the language department in my school on the Lower East Side until it closed two years ago. I then moved to Brooklyn Studio Secondary School where I taught Italian for 2-years. I loved the school and my students, however, this year I decided to return to my alma mater, Edward R. Murrow, where I have received a position to teach both Italian and ESL. I am still heartbroken about leaving my old school and it was a hard decision, but Murrow provided more room to grow as an educator in different fields, as it is a bigger school, and maybe run the language department one day!

I love my students with all of my heart and I love teaching adolescents. Watching them metamorphose into young-adults brings me true joy.

The other day, I bumped into a student and she told me "You were a bright and shining light in my life, Ms. Schiffman and always put a smile on your students' faces." I cried tears of joy. I could never imagine myself doing anything else.

I have also tutored for many years - from kids up to the PhD level in Foreign Languages. I also teach Italian at Columbia Teachers College after school to Grad students.

Fun facts about me: I work as a stylist over the weekends (because I love fashion as well), and my sister lives in Berlin! I started taking German at Hunter but stopped during the pandemic. I hope to go back and learn more in Berlin! I speak Italian, Spanish, some Russian, some Yiddish, Hebrew, and learning German! I feel language learning promotes diversity and acceptance of different human beings, which is why I love being a language teacher!

I am not very nervous about the class, I am nervous about going into a new school in a few days (not very new, it was my alma mater), but going in as a teacher this time. My old school had 900 students in total between middle and high school, and my new school has 5,000 students, only high school! AHHHHH!!!!!!!!

I look forward to meeting everyone in this course!!

A presto,
Jessica

Hello everyone! my name is Leslie Castro or Ms.Castro. I am currently working as a substitute teacher in a public school in Queens. I have experience teaching in monolingual and dual language classes. This past school year I was a Spanish Kindergarten Dual langauge teacher. I was teaching remotely and in-person at the same time along side with my partner. It was definitely a challenging experience but I survived throughout the school year with the help and support of my partner.

One thing that brought me joy recently was having the opportunity to work for the Summer Rising program this summer. It was such a great experience seeing and meeting new students in-person. I was glad to be part of thier lives to support their learning and get them ready for the upcoming school year. One thing I am nervous about is schools getting shutdown again and going back to remote (lets pray it doesnt happen). I personally enjoy teaching in-person than online becasue I get to interact face-to-face with students, provide hands-on learning and collaborate with colleagues. One thing I am looking forward to is meeting and working with everyone in this course.

Hi! My name is Elizabeth. My pronouns are she/her/hers and I go by Ms. Elizabeth. I previously taught PreK before I began to teach FL Spanish at the elementary school in Boro Park where I have been teaching for almost 10 years. Last year, I taught Kindergarten remotely which was challenging at first mostly because the parents needed lots of support signing into Zoom and using the tools as well as other school apps to help their children at home.
One thing that brought me joy is to get to know and observe how much the students and parents 😆 had grown from the start to the end of the school year. I was grateful to them for their support, patience and understanding as I communicated with them and taught their children remotely how to listen, speak, read and write English when most parents and students did not understand the language. I am looking forward and am nervous at the same time to meet the challenges that the new school year in-person classes may bring as I tackle the assignments for our class this semester. I still, yet, have to learn to juggle and balance time between work, college, health, etc. 🤓

My name is Fiona Tsang and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I will be a first year teacher at PS 130 The Parkside School and so excited to meet my students. I was a substitute teacher at this school during the pandemic from March - June 2020, but decided not to continue as a sub the following school year. I ended up being a lead teacher at a pod in Battery Park City with only 8 students!

One thing that brought me joy recently was watching my dancers perform at an AAPI Dance Festival at St. Marks Place. I choreograph on the side and being able to connect with other dancers and choreographers after the lockdown was so rewarding and made my heart full!

One thing I am looking forward to is getting to know my students. I hope to make an impact in the classroom and be a positive light during this pandemic.

I am nervous about not being able to balance everything on my plate.

My name is Yasmin Mendoza and I am currently working in a therapeutic school called Academics West in the Upper West Side. This is my first year working with this school and I am excited for a new environment that is different from what I am used to. I graduated from Hunter College as a double major in the QUEST Program on Childhood Education Grades 1-6 and English Language Arts in May 2020. This past year I worked as a per diem substitute teacher at Hunter College Campus Schools for Kindergarten to Sixth/Seventh Grade. I was in person for the whole year and it was a challenging but fun experience.

One thing that brought me joy recently was that I am going to work in a school that is a totally different environment that I have never experienced before. This school specializes in teaching students with different disabilities and uses techniques that I have learned about, but haven’t used them at all. I am beyond excited to work here because I will be teaching English and Spanish to students in the upper grades in high school while also working with students in the elementary school level. This school ensures that everyone is safe, so we only get to work with a small group of students to limit exposure. One thing that I am looking forward to is working with small groups of elementary, middle and high school students. I have taught up to the sixth grade and working with high school students is something that I have been looking forward to. One thing that I am nervous about is being able to balance working as a Focus Teacher while also taking two graduate classes. I have done it before and I managed to find a balance and plan ahead of time. I feel like having a planner is fantastic because it helps you plan ahead on when you should complete assignments and projects before it is due.

This is my second year as a K-12 teacher. I taught English literacy and oracy classes for international students at the college level when I was doing my MA at Indiana University as well (I am in the certificate program now at Hunter).

One thing that has brought me joy recently has been visiting my mom and meeting her new kitten. I brought my cat along with me, and he and the kitten got along really well. I was nervous that he wouldn't get along with other cats, but they couldn't leave each other alone! This gives me hope that I can get another cat in the future once I move to a bigger apartment. :)

One thing I'm looking forward to is starting at a new school. I had a really bad experience at my school last year as a new teacher, and it really shook my confidence. I just started at my new school a few days ago and I am already feeling optimistic.

One thing I'm nervous about is balancing all my work. I don't have my official class assignments yet, but from what I've seen so far I think I'm going to have a lot of different classes to deal with between pull-out and push-in instruction. I hope I still have enough time to rest and recharge in between prepping for all of those classes and completing the work for this class.

I realized how important it is for us to be in person teaching our students, especially our SWD and ELLs. One thing I am nervous about this year is having another lockdown. I hope that all will be well and all will be safe and healthy. I am also nervous about being able to accomplish, juggle, and manage all that is happening in my professional and personal life.

Hi all! My name is Guada Pimentel and my pronouns are she/her/hers. This is my 2nd year teaching. Last year I taught Kindergarten at a dual language charter school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This year I am teaching 1st grade at a dual language charter school in Washington Heights.

One thing that brought me joy recently has been visiting my family in Mexico after not visiting for two years. When the pandemic hit, I had two trips planned to Mexico that got cancelled. Getting the opportunity to hug my grandmother again has been the highlight of my year.

One thing I’m looking forward to is trying out different strategies to help out my students. Last year I learned what worked and what didn’t, and I’m excited to put it into practice.

One thing I’m nervous about is not being able to properly manage my time. Sometimes I feel like I put too much on my plate which causes me to be anxious. I also go through periods of extreme procrastination, so I hope this semester is a lot better.

Hi everyone! Ms name is Chelsea Chizever. I am currently a 4th grade teacher and team lead at my school P.S. 41 Gunhill Road in the Bronx! I substitute taught on Long Island for three years, then took a jump and moved into Astoria 3 years ago to have a classroom of my own! Although COVID has changed a lot of aspects of teaching, I wouldn't trade my time with the DOE for anything.

Something that has recently brought me joy was working with my theatre kids again out on the North Fork. We re-opened the theatre to live performances, which was incredibly special. Many of them (ages 14-22) missed out on their senior shows, graduations, and proms, so this was a very special experience for them.

One thing I am nervous about this year is juggling grad school and becoming lead for an almost all new team at school. I am looking forward to seeing students daily in person!
