Post Walton's Letters, in Volume 1 we get to know more about Victor. We learn that he is from Geneva and his family has good social standing where they live. Victor tells us that his dad, Alphonse, met his mom, Caroline, when his best friend Beaufort "Grew worse [and she] was entirely occupied in attending him" until he eventually dies. Moreover, Victor tries to pursue an education at Ingolstadt, which is crucial because it is what contributed to his desire to bring the dead back to life (aka the monster he created). After is creation Victor saw "The beauty of [his] dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled [his heart]" (pg. 42). We also find out that Victor's younger brother, William, died (the monster killed him). As a result, Victor moves back to Geneva, where Justine is blamed for William's death and gets capital punishment. - D.R

To forget the horrible events that just happened, Victor, Elizabeth, and Ernest decide to "Make an excursion to the Valley of Chamounix" (pg 83). While there, Victor encounters the monster and tells him to go away. However, the monster wants him to listen to him. From here, we get a shift in perspective and a frame tale. The monster tells Victor how he had left the apartment to a small village and was not welcomed due to his appearance and is all lonely. As he wondered around, he noticed a cottage, where a blind man, a young lady (Agatha), and a young man (Felix) lived. He observed them do their duties and indirectly helped them as well. He felt the need to talk to them and wanted to be loved like any other human being. However, none of this was possible once he went inside to talk to the old blind man, as the others were cold towards him and kicked him out. This is a major turning point in the monster's character as he has now acquired enough knowledge to view all humans as evil. For this reason, he threatens Victor to make a female monster, so that he is no longer alone, to which Victor also says yes! - D.R

Victor decides to go to England to gather more scientific research to create the new monster with his best friend Henry but finds himself troubled as he does not know what this creature will turn out to be. He decides though that he won't create "Another like [the monster], equal in deformity and wickedness." (pg. 167). The monster does not take this lightly and kills his best friend - Henry. Victor goes to prison for a couple of months because he was blamed for Henry's death but is set free. Once free, he goes back to Geneva and marries Elizabeth. Victor has the phrase "I will be with you on your wedding-night" ingrained in his memory after they get married, and such phrase becomes a reality as Elizabeth gets killed by the Monster. Eventually, Alphonse dies due to everything that happened and now Victor wants full vengeance. Vengeance he does not get as he dies. The monster shows up see to see Victor's dead body and believes his goal has been reached and is now to die and move on. - DR

At the genesis of novel 1 the contradictory personalities of Elizabeth and Victor are depicted in Victor's diction " I delighted in investigating the facts relative to the actual world; she busied herself in following the aerial creations of the poets..."(pg26). Despite their differences they find "harmony in that very dissimilitude" as Victor proclaims. I wonder if this relates to the old adage that "opposites attract". Perhaps Elizabeth who is gentle and nurturing will balance the ambition and hubris of Victor. Maybe she will play a crucial role in calming the psyche of Victor as he becomes obsessed with creating the monster, and the guilt he succumbs to (as revealed through the letters) as a result of his vile creation.

Losing ones mother is certainly a traumatic experience. This is true for Victor who loved his mom, describing her as an "admirable women" and fell into grief after her death. It doesn't take a genius to recognize this was the event that sparked his infatuation with the realities of life and death. This coupled with his background and interest in the natural sciences accelerated the gestation of his plan to bring life to the dead through experimentation. What fascinated me most was his describing death as "evil"(pg32) due to the void left in those nearest to the deceased. My theory is that he believed in creating life the void would be fulfilled. He would no longer feel empty after losing his mother. Clearly he was wrong and his unchecked ambition only increased death around him. What an idiot.

As i was laying in bed watching Netflix, my mind began to wander and landed on Frankenstein's Monster. I began to reflect on the moral dilemma created through his role in the novel. On one hand, the poor monster never asked to be created... He was ostracized by the world simply for being an ugly beast. All he desired was to be accepted and loved and was instead mistreated and rejected. On the other hand, he gets all butt hurt and starts killing people (Victors bro, friend, and wife). Can one have sympathy for a murderer??? Is revenge ever justified??? I cant tell if i should feel bad for him or hate him.

The Paradox.

I came to the realization that this entire time we have been referring to Victor's creation as "the monster" which is philosophically problematic. I recognize in the technical sense, he is an ugly creature. But as I reflect on what we think of as a "monster" I imagine a narcissistic personality driven to harm others for their own self gratification. And while Victor's creation does commit murder and spread evil in the world, he does so only seeking to avenge his suffering, not from a place of pride and arrogance. Was it not Victor's hubris that led him to "play god"? Was he not the same man that abandoned his creation to fend for itself in a cruel world? Did he not know in creating a living being he would be risking the lives of those nearest to him and still did it anyway? Victor's creation was a product of the hostile social and environmental factors that shaped his vengeful persona. Victor on the other hand was brought up in a productive and supportive environment, he chose to be blinded by his selfish pursuits that benefitted no one but his pride. Perhaps it is time to change the narrative and recognize that Victor has been "the monster" all along.

hmm volume 1 was interesting…

starting with the fact that victor’s father married his own friends daughter which was weird to include but hey love is love i guess.. Apart from that I really liked how a sort of context was included about victor via his childhood. It seems he had a great childhood filled with a loving family so where did it go wrong??? Once he picked up that book on Cornelius Agrippa(pg 27), I would say it all went downhill for him. Yes, it was good he found a passion and pursued it even though others thought it as unwise but look where it got him. He’s created this creature who killed his own brother and now he’s left to suffer the consequences of Justine’s own condemnation because he didn’t even attempt to contain the creature, and again why even make it in the first place?!?? #freejustine!! Although, my thoughts towards him do change as I remember he has lost his mother so I agree with bobble head about how that may have fueled his desire to break down this barrier between life and death since he essentially was so enthralled in his grief. Because of his undisturbed passion towards his discovery I feel like deep down he’s afraid of who he himself has become and most definitely afraid of the creature he’s created.(Also want to point out how fast he changed his view on his own creation which was inevitable but still caught me by surprise.) I have to say though I really do like all of the characters except Victor who created all this mess but who can blame him?(I still blame him) Elizabeth is a great character who really shines with the maternal role bestowed upon her from Victors late mother and I will say she is my favorite so far. Henry is a great friend towards Victor he’s a real one for sure and Vic’s father seems like a good doting dad. Overall every character is great (except victor) and the plot flows very smoothly!!

rip justine:(((

anyways volume 2 was a doozy. With a good part of it being about the creature and his endeavors, I feel as if it really allowed us to get inside its mind. We were able to see his sort of reflection towards becoming a ‘human’ as he learns how to speak, talk and understand new emotions. Readers now feel sympathy towards the creature as he didn’t choose to become alive but rather he was the result of an eager man who thought he knew what was best. All the creature longed for was compassion and companionship and not to be exiled by man because of his physical attributes. For me this allowed for a sort of shift between sides you could say. In general many would normally be on victors side because of his loss and grief but with volume two we also see the horrible situations the creature had experienced allowing for more people to ‘be on his side’. Although it is important to remember that he did murder Victors brother BUT he has a reason to as well! Is the creature in the right or Victor?!?!🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Victor starts by describing his childhood, saying “No youth could have passed more happily than mine,” (page 26). This was a surprise to me because I initially thought that an evil creature would have been created by an evil person, who probably had a messed up childhood. I soon learned that Victor’s fascination towards the works of Cornelius Agrippa was the reason for his enthusiasm and a turning point in his life. Something that also stood out to me was the frequent mention of nature, which on page 44 he ignores. He was deeply engrossed in his occupation, showing how he ignored nature/ the seasons that brought him “supreme delight” and possibly meaning that he also ignored the laws of nature by pursuing knowledge that went against the nature of life and death. What unfolds as a result, the death of William, could be seen as a punishment in a way.

The creature explains to Victor his tale of what he has been through. There is a lot of discoveries that he makes, but his encounters with people were never once good. The family that he observes for a while is described in his eyes as beautiful each in their own aspects. He helps them by gathering fire wood for them and doing things like clearing the snow. Sadly, his genuine desire to simply introduce himself to Felix, Agatha, De Lacy, and Safie leads to further hatred after they reject him. His hatred is directed towards Victor drives him to go to Geneva, but a small moment on page 132 stood out to me. He has been traveling at night for some time now, but decides to travel during the day through deep woods. The day was one of the first of spring and he was cheered by the “loveliness of its sunshine,” showing nature’s beauty. He forgets his solitude and “deformity” during this moment which was odd because it seemed like a random moment, but still had a profound impact on his being, like he was born again. It was short lived, but showed a spiritual side to nature.

Loosing his mother and the very beginning and towards the end his brother and even Justine.

Along with the author ,Cornelius, M.Waldman was an inspiration to Victor when divining into his studies and research.

I feel like Victor got too caught up with his creature that he stopped caring about anything else and even himself for a while. After creating the creature, Victor started struggling mentally since he was so isolated during the process. I feel like he was so obsessed that it left me thinking, it didn't occur to him the pros and cons through test trials and experiments, that the consequences of his actions would leave him wanting to disown his own creation??- bc yes he succeeded, but also got random parts( kinda weird but made it work) so what did he expect? I'm guessing his knowledge and curiosity got the best of him.

Victor procured a new found passion on going after the creature allowing for strength in his endeavors but alas he was unsuccessful. Even if he was unsuccessful I feel as if he must’ve felt a sort of peace knowing he would be with his family members again. IMO the creature has more of a good outcome?? He got to see Victor dead and overcome all the misery and suffering he was put through with his own death. He got to emphasize his harrowing experiences and provide it as a sort of justice to his murders and even death.
Rip to Elizabeth too, she did NOT deserve to die. Because of all of these deaths Victor was able to fully realize the impact of his actions allowing for motivations as to his pursuit of the creature. I think in the end they both got closure(more so the creature) BUT my question Im thinking about is what about Ernest?? Is he dead too???

Hmmmmm…. Victor’s a coward. See he could have admitted to his creation of the creature in order to save Justine but chose not to because he believed that they wouldn’t have enough evidence against her and that people would trust in her personality. I also like how in page 41 Victor says how he won’t misguide us down the wrong path but that instead will show us how not to make the same mistakes he did. I find it sad that all of this could have been prevented if his dad had just explained to him why the teachings of Agrippa were no longer relevant at their time instead of just telling Victor that Agrippa’s work was meaningless because that caused Victor to become more curious about those teachings. Also as soon as Victor gave life to the creature, he felt disgusted and scared? Like what did he expect. Instead of feeling the pride and happiness that he desired by finishing the only project he worked on for 2 years, he felt dissatisfied and even acknowledged that reaching that point wasn’t what he thought it was going to be. He thought reaching the pinnacle of his career would finally be enough but instead he grew paranoid and regrets doing it.

The creature ended up having the ability to be able to learn and human like emotions that overall led to the poor actions the creature committed. If Victor was present to teach the creature and care for it his brother and Justine would still be alive and Frankenstein wouldn’t have to live in isolation.

I liked how the story caught up to Walton and his ship still at the North Pole . The story is brought back to the beginning, only now the reader has this whole context/ knowledge of who the stranger Walton finds is. I found it hard to believe how Victor kept following the creature for so long. Even if he was fueled by hatred or wanting revenge, he was never able to actually complete his goal. The ending was very vague, since Victor’s story/ life does end, but the creature and Walton’s story is just left with no ending. Creature just leaves, and nothing about what Walton does after is fully shown.

This may sound cruel for me to feel this way but I enjoyed the fact that Victor started to feel repulsed by anything in relation to science. It really shows how when you indulge into something without any breaks, it can ultimately burn you out or destroy you entirely. I only somewhat find joy in this matter because Victor believes a "new species would bless [him] as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to [him]" pg. 42 Chapter 3. With that it's compelling how he goes from wanting to be a God of the lifeless coming to life to then regretting what he's done and it being nothing like he dreamed.

This volume was pretty interesting. First it was kinda creepy how the creature was describing his obsessive and stalking behavior as love and affection but again he isn’t human. I like how we were able to know his story and what led to him killing Victor’s brother. This volume allows the reader to sympathize with the creature because he wasn’t asked to be reanimated and when he seeks the acceptance of humans, he is instead shunned for his inhumane figure and only wishes for them to accept him. I see why he wants a companion. He wants to be outcasted with a companion so that he’ll be less lonely. I find it interesting how he’s able to understand human emotions and was intelligent enough to learn the language. I also think Victor is at fault for what happened because he should have at least not abandoned the creature immediately after reanimating it because it could have prevented a lot of this.

This contradicts what I originally thought because I thought if he made a harmful creature then it was probably due to an unstable home? Kinda like when you think of criminals, you think they are bad due to their life experiences. However, Victor’s parents were very involved in his life considering his father was his teacher. When Victor goes off to the university and meets his professor his interest in science deepens which I feel foreshadows the danger that will soon arise. And his creepy apartment doesn’t help the case. We then learn that Victor succeeds in creating the creature that he soon becomes scared of. When his brother is murdered and my poor girl Justine is blamed I was like what???? And the fact that Victor didn’t come forward and admit his wrongdoing gave very much COWARD!

I think a major issue in the book is that Victor failed to realize how his actions result in consequences. He creates the monster without thinking about the individuals he could be impacting. Having “succeeded in discovering the cause of generation and life,” he becomes obsessed with creating a monster. He doesn't even stop to think about what the experiences of that monster might be like, nor is he fazed by the fact that he ignores his family to pursue his work. He fails to take responsibility for his actions and this is further shown when justine is blamed for the crime while he knew the truth and didn't bother to come forward and defend her.

We can see how he tries to socialize with others but is rejected due to his looks- scary and ugly. I like how we saw how he tried to adapt to his environment, such as learning how to talk and learning how to read emotions. Despite his attempts to be likeable he is still neglected sparking his hate for humans. I don’t blame the monster for his way of being because he did try to be “good” to be accepted and have company. But once rejected I see why he demands Victor for him to create a partner.

Volume 1 serves as a way to meet Victor's character. His family appears to be close and loving, but they seem to suffer many misfortunes throughout this volume. Victor's curiosity leads him to move to Ingolstadt to which I believe is an act of selfishness. This is further seen when he says, " I paid no visit to Geneva" (pg 39). This is an example of Victor's curiosity and desires overpowering his feelings and affection for his family. In my opinion this volume reveals how ungrateful or inconsiderate Victor is since he leaves a loving family to create a creature that he ends up fearing. His choice to not reveal this creature as the murderer of his brother and instead leave Justine dying also reveals some sort of selfishness, although I understand he is scared for what the monster might continue to do and what his family might think of the monster. I understand he wanted to discover things on his own but I don't comprehend why this curiosity wasn't stopped after being warned by many that the readings he did were in vain. I'm also not sure why his constant reassurance for Justine not being guilty, when he wasn't present, wasn't questioned by Elizabeth or his father but I guess they thought he assumed so because of Justine's kindness in the past.

Seems pretty strange that he only got scared after it was successful. He feels bad after the monster kills his brother because of GUILT and EMBARRASSMENT because he knows what he did and succeeded in is something that he shouldn't have been attempting with the dangers that could have lead to his or other innocent people's lives. The guilt should be swallowing him because of the devastation his creature caused. His concern was mostly for his own well-being and hope of escaping the plight that he is entangled in.

I think the monster is smarter than we think and he decided to kill all the things that were close to Victor to make him feel regret. Frankenstein wanted the answers for manipulation of life and only abandons his creation when he thinks it is ugly. The creation wanted to make sure Victor understood how selfish he was to create the monster and to constantly make acts where he was more worried about himself. He put his own family in danger by not warning them about his creation and never wrote back to them out of fear that they would judge him. This showed he only cared about himself and he caused so many of his family and even his wife to die because of his own goals to go against nature.

AGAINNNNN, at the start of the dang volume we see Victor trying to find a way to move past all the death and despair and he is solely focused on himself like his father and Elizabeth aren't also grieving BECAUSE OF HIM! Sadly though, he attempts suicide as a way of escaping. I genuinely feel like it would be better for him to just admit what he has done. He is concerned about being considered crazy, but i would bet millions of dollars that there is some form of evidence to back up his story if he tells anyone. After again trying to feel better after he cause 2 people in his family to die, he is all of a sudden comrades with the monster. This man Victor needs a sip of water and a Tylenol cause this whole thing is just wild. The monster has been a better human than Victor (despite some theft here and there) it has an understanding of right and wrong and devoted it's time to learning something actually useful. The monster even learned RESPECT, this is seen when he abandons humanity after seeing the fear he evoked into everyone, also when he doesn't intrude onto the neighbors even though he knows so much about them.

I think the readers learn that if you don't learn how to constrain your curiosity to a certain level and you choose to ignore the consequences, you will end up regretting something you could have avoided in the first place. something that really caught my attention though is that victor was willing to sacrifice the people he very much loved to save the human race, I don't know if I could do the same.

He was mistreated by humans for no reason besides his exterior and not by the love he had in his heart before the constant betrayal. He spoke some facts to Victor, and admitted his wrongs (unlike his creator). He tells Victor to make him a wifey so he can put a little rizz(iykyk). I feel so good knowing that at this point in the reading Victor lies to the monster and his decision to dump the remains of the 2nd monster in the ocean led him to being accused of murder! How the turns have tabled. Nevermind, BOOOO Mary Shelly!!! Turns out the body was Henry after the monster strangles him. The monster was super fed up, and was like Elizabeth its time for you to say peace out and he killed her. Only after this and Victor's dad dying not too long after, he decides to confess but he isn't believed. He devotes his life to getting revenge on the monster.

So basically, Victor is someone who has strange interests and he chooses to act on them. He creates a monster and thinks it is so hideous so he just abandons it and when the monster goes into rage after being treated trashy by all humans, and he knows his creator's thoughts of him and he knows of the regret that Victor has because of building the monster. He allows 4 people to die in order to protect HIMSELF. He likes to seem like he is motivated by all the despair, but bro literally caused all of it. He started with so much and threw it all away over a hobby that he obviously didn't have strong love for and dedication (or else he would have been happy to make the female monster, which he refused to do leading to his wife's death) He makes decisions based solely on emotions he feel in the moment. Also to add, Victor was not even condescending about what he would say, he would just outright be mean like saying that the children of the monster and it's wife would be "a race of devils . . . on the earth.” Now isn't that mean? Even after all the torment he faced after being abandoned and judged by all, the monster still loves Victor which is why he was crying after Victor's demise. This story was very good, and I would build off of Dario's idea of the importance of the POV switches, if we only knew one side of this story everyone would definitely hate the "antagonist" deeply because of the bias that both Victor and the monster both have towards one another.

I HATE how my dude Victor died without exerting his revenge and how the creature got to live and was like oh I was filled with remorse blah blah blah. Like if you really felt that bad why did you continue to bring misery to Victor. But I kinda like how the creature was like I’m going to kill myself and make sure nobody finds my body so that nobody has to ever go through what Victor went through. I also found it interesting how the relationship between Victor and the creature was described of that of a “master” and “slave”. Ultimately both Victor and the creature became slaves. Victor was the creature’s slave and the creature became a slave to his desire for vengeance against Victor, the person he thinks wronged him.

I feel like this volume contradicted what I initially thought Victors life to be like. For someone to be on a boat and everything he did you would think he grew up terribly. But in fact he did NOT. Which is so baffling someone who grew up so well would making something as terrible as what he did . Like literally the first sentence is "my family is the most distinguished of that republic" ... like who would have thought. However, this volume answer many of the questions and provide background on how he became interested in what he did. It also shows how he starts unable to suppress he desires and leads to this uncontrollable curiosity. This was a very odd volume to read, but interesting overall.

Very odd volume as well. But gave lots of insight on Victor. We are able to learn more about his obsession with the creature. I also find it cute or idk ?? how the monster tries really hard to try and talk to Victor, and how sad his story is with being forced to leave his life due to his appearance. I also feel bad because he was accepted by no one. The reader can really start to feel compassion since he did not ask to be made and must deal with this suffering. This lokwey makes me start to hate victor since he was the cause of all this and I can start seeing him as the villain and cause of his own misery that happens later on.

I feel like everything that happened to Victor was well deserved. His KARMA for sure. Victor thinks he knows it all but does he really. I think everyone getting killed off should have been a real eye-opener for him. I def don't feel bad bc he made the creature the way he is so he had it coming. I just can't believe someone like him is capable of all that.. like he had such a happy childhood. I am baffled and feel so bad for the monster he just wanted to be understood.

Hmmmm. Idk how to feel about the book. I mean I get it. Victor was young and ambitious and didn’t really think about the consequences of creating the creature but like what did he expect? I mean he took 2 years on this sole project and then abandons it the minute he finishes. Then he’s paranoid about the creature and acts like he doesn’t exist. Well the creature didn’t know anything so ofc it’s going to seek humans because it needs someone to rely on. The creature was also at fault but I feel like he wouldn’t have ended up like that if Victor had accepted him and helped him. Idk it’s a trade guy. In the end, Victor had to dedicate the remainder of his life hunting his creation and the creature wanted Victor to spend the rest of his life hunting him so that he could be filled with misery. I feel bad about all the people who had to die because of Victor’s ambition and cowardice. RIP Justine, William, Henry, Elizabeth, and Victor’s Father:(

I found the book pretty interesting especially how victor married his cousin Elizabeth. I do feel like the whole vibe how his family came to be and how his interest in Albertus Magnus and Paracelsus came out of a sudden just from his curiosity and how these people will impact his whole life when he creates a monster! I do feel the gothic vibes and sort of witchy in a way too.

This is about Frankensteins monsters’(Franko) ambition of his self education which Franko was motivated by his lust of killing and stalking to learn which helped him improve his mental capacity and knowledge. He used a strangers books to educate himself on humane ideologies and topics which shows he was willingly and effort fully attempting to achieve a capacity of interacting with humans and manipulating them. This shows that even monsters like Franko can advance and adapt with motivation and lust for human livelihood.

(Yes, Im calling him Franko.)

Unpopular opinion but i can sympathize with Victor due to the death of his mother (and later on everyone else he loves) and because he was genuinely curious about science and life and didn’t mean to cause harm by creating the monster. He was just very curious, especially after reading and learning about Cornelius Agrippa, and found a passion in life. Even though he was told the science was outdated, he still wanted to learn about the different perspectives in science. When he created the monster, i did start to lose sympathy for him though because even though he was the one who created the monster, he still couldn’t bear to look at it and neglected it completely. He should’ve taken accountability and maybe if he had taught the monster how to live a “normal” life, the monster wouldn’t have later caused so much destruction (killing William and in turn Justine in vol.1). —Elizabeth

I think it’s really interesting that the creature was able to adapt that much to the “human world” just by watching and listening to the De Lacey household. It’s interesting how he was able to have such cohesive thoughts and emotions in the first place because he was a creation that was just made and suddenly given life. He wasn’t taught anything at all since Victor fled so the fact that he is able to actually understand things that humans do is weird. I feel like he should’ve initially acted like an animal ?? I think that because the creature was given all of these emotions and thoughts makes the readers able to sympathize with the creature a lot and builds a sort of hatred towards Victor for just leaving him helpless. Even though this proves the creature’s intelligence and ability, it’s still super creepy and weird that he stalked this family for such a long time. I think because he had so much affection for them though it’s really sad when they reject him when he finally talks to them. 🥲
