What did you select to share with us? Why? How do you see your topic connected to ideas and themes that have emerged so far in the course?

I talked about the color wheel. I chose this because I was trying to think of things I learned around 2nd grade and this was what I came up with. I think the biggest connection I found was how colors can help with expression. I think it's important for the kids to learn from a young age to be able to express themselves. Whether emotionally or just showing who they are by using colors.

How did you introduce the important aspects to the group? What was important for people to know or think about?

The important things were the things I went over multiple times. I showed a video and reiterated a lot of the things in that video 2-3 times to make sure the students got it. But I also had them participate in an activity so that they could work on understanding the topic themselves. It was most important to see how the colors are in everyday life. I had several examples of where/how we see colors so that was a main point of importance.

How did you engage the class with the topic? What was the goal of your discussion questions or activity?

I engaged the class with some coloring activities. The first activity was mainly just to get the students to think about an outfit they may wear and what colors they might use in that. The second one was focused on complementary colors so that they could get used to see them together and become more familiar. Generally, I was just trying to get them to become more familiar with the colors. You can't really define colors to a 1st or 2nd grader so using lots of examples and practice helps them to understand.

What surprised you about building this experience? What do you think went well? What would you do differently next time?

It surprised me how time consuming it was to make the lesson. I knew it took a long time, but the amount of times I changed the activities and researched to try and teach it the best way was quite a few. I think the activities that I ended up doing went well and were engaging enough for the students. The main thing that I would do differently the next time is have some skin color options for the first coloring activity. I wasn't really thinking about skin color when I made the activity but I think it would be something good to add to create an inclusive environment.

Assign yourself a grade based on the assignment expectations ________/100 - and talk about why you gave yourself that grade.

I think I would give myself around a 92-95/100. I talked about colors as a way of expression which I think is really important in an urban setting. However, I also missed a pretty major inclusive piece with the lack of skin toned colors for one activity. I also think my lesson was a little short, but would have been long enough had the students fully completed the last activity. I think I made an engaging lesson for little kids. It can kind of just be hard to gauge since I was teaching to adults and not actual 1st or 2nd graders.
