It is the national costume of Indonesia but it is usually worn by Javanese, Sundanese, and Balinese. Kebaya is a traditional blouse dress usually for women. It used to be worn only by the royal family but as time pass by, commoners started wearing it too. The kebaya usually have some small flower embroideries on its collar or sleeves. It is usually worn with a Sarong or long batik cloth tied around the waist.

There are many types of kebaya created in Indonesia. Kebaya Kartini is a very popular type of kebaya among aristocrats in the 19th century Java. It is named after the Indonesian national heroine, Raden Ajeng Kartini, who is a pioneer in the area of education for girl’s and women’s right in Indonesia. Kebaya Kartini is usually made of fine, opaque fabrics. It covers the hips and unlike all the other, kebaya kartini has a minor adornment, such as stitching or applied laces with a v-shaped collar. This kebaya is popular because it creates a tall and slender impression of the wearer.

Nowadays, the kebaya is known as a highly localized expression of ethnic culture, artistry, and tailoring tradition skills. It is now worn by women in the rural agricultural village or during formal events. Fashion Designer looked for ways to modify the style of kebaya and it can now be worn with jeans or skirts. They modified by cutting the length of the sleeves and also the length of the clothes itself.

It is also called Tongkonan. It is a traditional house of the Toraja people in South Sulawesi. The Toraja is known to be one of the most distinctive traditional building of all Indonesia. The architecture has a unique saddle like roof top and is usually built facing North or South. In the past, the construction of Tongkonan is build by family members and friends. The interior space of Toraja is very small compared to its oversize roof and it is dark with few windows. However, the Toraja people usually spend their days outside their homes so it does not bother them.

Despite looking very unbalanced, the Toraja is constructed without the need for nails. They used tongue and groove joinery method to construct the building. It is a difficult method to use and requires high accuracy because a slight different in size will cause the joint to loosen. The oversized roof is said to be due to the culture of Toraja People of celebrating the life and death in equal measure, while sacrificing animals like buffalos by doing so and preserving human remains afterwards. The Toraja houses are filled with unique paintings or carvings and decorations of animals like buffalos, chicken, and snakes. It is believed that this resembles the legend of local livestock.

The house, which is once a symbol of family history and worth, has been abandoned and replaced within the last few decades by the style of lowland Bugis dwellings, which is a spacious, plain wooden houses with many doors and windows. It is also known as Rumah Batu, which means stone houses and is admired with its modernity. The locals now prefer these instead of tongkonan because they are less expensive and require less time and resources. The tongkonan roof alone requires a vast amount of bamboo, time and labor. The Bugis house is also better in terms of functionality due to the availability of electricity nowadays. It is also brighter and more comfortable compared to the tongkonan, which has no windows and very cramped interior.

To avoid the disappearing of the tongkonan traditions due to contemporary preferences, some individuals of the torajan people combined the 2 structures together. Above a Bugis style or a concrete building where people live, is another level consisting of Tongkonan- shaped roof. This creates a 2 storey house, providing both comfort, space, and symbol of tradition.

There are only about 75 people, who are all women, actively weaving these baskets with natural rattan fiber and dye. They first plant and grow the sega rattan species plants. These canes are cut, peeled, dried, and split into thin strips that can be used to weave these baskets.

These baskets each have unique designs. The plaid-motif is the most traditional form and motif while some can have ferns, fruits, vines, and shoots as the motifs.

These Ata bags are created from Ata Grass which is a plant from East Bali. The Ata grass is resistant to moisture and is very durable. They are woven into bags and purses. It requires a high skill and practice to make the bag with precision. This skill has been passed down and perfected over many generations by Balinese women.

The process of finalizing this bag is quite simple compared to how it was made. They are dried under the sun for several days after it is made and then smoked over a coconut husk fire for the golden-brown color. This process leaves behind a smoky natural scent that will eventually disappear as time pass by. People nowadays find the smell uncomfortable so all they need to do was just open the bag for a few days and the smell will be gone. The whole process from weaving it may take up to a month depending on its size. The bag usually comes with a batik cloth inside which makes the bag look authentic and summery. Even though it is a traditional bag, it is now considered elegant choice when strolling around the town in the summer sun. It is very popular among women and young adults all over the world especially in France and it is even sold on online shops.

AKA the tie-dye technique. It is known as Jemputan or Celup Ikat. It is quite an easy method to create batik patterns on a piece of fabric.

The fabric is tied and dipped into coloured liquid. The fabric is then untied and the batik pattern is revealed. It is sold at a very cheap price because it is very easy to produce and takes a short amount of time. It can also be made generally by people and even young children for fun and unlike any other batik, the colours are more vibrant and colourful.
