MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine) a derivative of amphetamine and a member of the phenethylamine family of chemicals.
Usually pills are not pure MDMA and are contaminated with other drugs such as methamphetamine, anesthetic ketamine, caffeine, ephedrine, and even heroin or over the counter cough suppressant.

He says when it started to kick in he felt "utterly incredible" and noticed that he thought everyone looked beautiful. He kissed his girlfriend and said it felt like kissing for the first time, and the sex was incredible. He kept taking the pills but after awhile the quality started getting bad and the high began to feel speedy. He later got bored with it, and stopped taking it.

Only 6.8 percent of people ages 12 and up reported ever using ecstasy. The use of MDMA has increase over the years.
Deaths do occur with MDMA but the basis of reported death is unclear, associated with MDMA is higher than the death rate of actually consuming MDMA. Deaths by alcohol and smoking are higher than death rates of MDMA. Over dose does occur but in small numbers.
