Padlet Week/Phase 2

1. Naveena Ramakrishnan (A177169)
24th to 30th July 2023

2. How is my progress?

I have been focusing more on the garment fit and getting familiarised with patterns, which will be a good appetiser for next week when I learn more about manually pattern drafting by hand. I learned these through 2 online sewing courses on Skillshare to better understand sewing patterns, how to use them, how to take measurements to find the perfect fit of a premade pattern, mastering different sewing techniques like darts and stay stitches and how to use an online software to draft patterns. My first task was a measurement worksheet & comparing my measurements with commercial measurements to be able to choose the right measurement pattern when sewing for myself. Next I incorporated that knowledge into creating a custom pattern online. I finally implemented the techniques I learnt to ensure the fit of the pattern was using my measurements and taking into account fitting ease.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

I learned about ‘fitting ease’ and how to incorporate that when looking at measurements to ensure someone can move comfortable and have full range of motion while wearing the garment.
Take note that most patterns available online involve cutting on a fold – so make sure to fold the cloth in half & cut from the middle.

Ensure placement of any motifs on the fabric is in the desired position & finally cut the fabric according to the grain line.
Make sure to mark any dots or notches indicated on the pattern on to the fabric to help with making darts and joining pieces.
If adding length or width to any pattern, make sure to judge where best to add the length ( eg: if length is needed above the bust or at the waist)

4. Your feelings & thoughts

This phase of the course focuses more on measurements and constructing and creating a foundation for me to understand how to draft patterns for the female body shape which can be mentally taxing at times as there is more planning involved. It is very satisfying when I understand how the 2-D pattern can be folded and shaped by darts to form a 3-D shape.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Understand & sew using commercial/ready made patterns!

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

It was harder to visualise the final dress form when it is still a 2-D pattern, but with time and practice I can now correlate how a certain pattern will fall on a body.
As my first project were straight forward, straight cut men’s shirt, I didn’t realise how many more aspects there were to consider in measurement & pattern drafting for women.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

I will begin Phase 3: Learn how to alter dress patterns, so I will be able to manually customize it to my liking. Sewing a made to measure muslin, a practice piece to ensure it has a good fit, troubleshoot any drag or ill fitting areas before proceeding to Phase 4.

How is your progress?

Throughout week 2, it was all about cutting the fabrics. There are two types of fabrics in sewing and tailoring, a lining is an inner layer of fabric and the actual clothing material. I used a saree to stitch my kurti and saree blouse, so I had to choose a similar color of cotton lining fabric. Initially the polar drawing I prepared to previous week had to be placed on the fabrics to be cut. The lining fabric have to be 2 inches shorter than the clothing material. The polar drawingS are secured using sewing pins and then cut precisely.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

When cutting the fabric, our free hand should be placed on the pinned piece of polar drawing and fabric so that during cutting we would not accidentally cut excess or insufficient parts of fabric.

4.

1. Your name, matric number, date

Name: Nurin Izzah Binti Mohd Rizam

Matric number: A180927

Date: 31st July- 4th August

2. How is your progress

This week was quite full as I am also starting my Fashion Design Art Class, 1 week earlier. Initially, according to schedule, I will continue with Make Up Service Practical and Aesthetic Service Consultation classes, however, cosmetology students had assessments this week, so I only got to join 2 days of MakeUp class, which was on Monday and Tuesday. Although it's only for 2 days, I did learn a lot about makeup:

Characteristics of Various Face Shapes ( I am round face)

Types of Makeup (Daily Makeup, Night Makeup, Stage Makeup)

Type of Cosmetic Products

Different type of brushes and its function

Makeup Technique

I learned about the daily makeup routine and tried to practice it on my sister (Picture 3). I was quite proud of my work as I don't really wear makeup. The most I have done before was applying foundation and lip balm. I always wanted to learn how to wear makeup but never started it, so to be able to learn it during this class was really a golden opportunity.

For the next 3 days, I joined Year 1 Fashion and Design Art class. This semester they need to make 4 clothes (Casual, Traditional, Pyjamas, Maternity wear). This week they started to make Traditional wear. I was told that it usually takes 2 and a half weeks to make one set of Baju Kurung, so I decided to start early so I can learn from the very beginning to the end of the process of making baju kurung. As I was 2 days late, I missed their theory classes on traditional wear, but the teachers gave me notes so I can read it.

In my first week, as other students are already in their 12th week, my teacher gave me a simplified reference notes of their syllabus. The topic include:

Sewing and designing equipment

Types of Fabric

Basic Hand Sewing Stitches

Body Measurement

Polar drawing

Sewing Machines

Each student needs to make their own baju kurung. I was assigned to one of the top students in class, which I need to follow her, observe, learn and help her throughout the process of making baju kurung for the next 3 weeks. My teacher thought its better for me to do it together with a student rather than alone as I have no experience of making clothes before and Baju Kurung is quite complicated as a beginner. She said I can help with sewing zip, pocket and pesak. This week, I got the opportunity to help with body measurement (pic 8) using the dummy as a reference, help with the polar drawing and cut the fabrics (pic 6-7). I also learned about all the signs of polar drawings, kelim, type of colars, sleeves.

3. Point to remember from week 2

MakeUp:

Different people have different face shapes and skin types. These are one of the important factors in choosing what kind of makeup is suitable for us. There are also several types of makeup for different occasions. Lighter makeup is more suitable for everyday look for going to class or work, while night makeup needs to stand out more as the lights tend to be dimmer at night.

Body measurement

There are a lot of areas that need to be measured in order to make perfect clothes, not just shoulders and arms. It's important to measure the collar, chest, hips to make sure the clothes fit with the customer. There are horizontal measurements and vertical measurements

Polar drawing

The drawing needs to be accurate with the measurements, so it's really important taking the right measurements to ensure the clothes will fit in. It's also important to put all the polar signs at the right area to prevent mistakes during cutting and sewing.

4. Your feeling and thoughts

The makeup class is super fun, and I started to get close with the students. They recommended lots of beauty products that are good but also affordable. They were fun and very cute.

Fashion class was also fun.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now

Makeup my sister :D (Pic 3)

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope

Joining a new class always makes me nervous, especially after I was getting comfortable with the previous group, and it was much more difficult compared to cosmetology as sewing requires a lot of technique and detail. It was a lot to take in the first 2 days, as the students already have 12th weeks of knowledge compared to me with no experience before this. However, the students and teachers assured me that there is nothing to be worried about. They were willing to help me and teach me everything. But overall the classes were really fun despite being tiring, but very enjoyable.

7. Your plan for next week (week3)

We will starting cut the fabrics and begin sewing parts.

My teacher also plan to teach me:

How to operate and use sewing machine

Hand sewing stitches.

Zip and pocket

Title: CALENDULA CROSS-STITCH

1. Your name, matric number, date

Anis Farzana Binti Faizal

A182938

5th August 2023

2. How is your progress?

So far so good! For the second week, I worked on my cross-stitching project. The pattern/design was picked by me, and I decided to do flowers as it seems to be an easy one to complete especially for beginners like me. Before starting on the stitching, I was taught on how to start putting a thread through the needle. I never thought an action as simple as that requires some kind of specific way but somehow it does, which is interesting! After that, I learned all about cross stitching that involves making a specific pattern, for instance, the number of threads I should use for the petals and the stem, determining the center, securing the hoop stitch and others. The pattern does seem like it could be done in a few hours as it looks simple but as soon as I start stitching it wasn’t as easy as it seems. It took me hours just to complete one type of flower! However, towards the end, I finished the pattern after a week, although it does not seem perfect. I am proud of it, nevertheless.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Don’t judge a book by its cover and believe in yourself! Do not underestimate simple things you see from the outside because the outside doesn’t define the inside entirely. In this context, it is the process of making it. The outcome of the stitching may seem like its straightforward and simple but truthfully the process of completing it costs a lot of things. Secondly, believe in yourself! Although the starting of the process makes you rethink about your decisions but if you have faith in yourself, the end is worth it! Finish what you start!

4. Your feelings & thoughts

In my opinion, making cross stitch is very challenging but actually in a positive way. This is because it takes a lot of your time, and it also costs your back! It definitely causes back pain because you’d be sitting in the same position for an amount of time. Doing repetitive stitching is also tiring and extremely difficult because you’d get tired and bored along the way, but it was definitely worth it towards the end. The satisfaction I felt after completing a flower is an understatement!

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Making this cross-stitching activity as a hobby or as an investment!

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

There were some difficulties that I have experienced while doing this activity which is having to deal with constant tangling and clustering of the thread which will then cause wasting. To overcome this problem, I went for shorter threads each time so that it would not tangle easily, or I’ll just support the threads from the back and handle the thread gently.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

Looking forward using the sewing machine as next week I’ll be working on the soft furnishings!

1. Your name, matric number, date

Name: Nurul Hazira Binti Rahamathulla
Matric no: A174290
Date: 5 July 2023 to 11 July 2023

2. How is your progress?

My progress is improving quite well as I am able to deal with few patients without guidance of my seniors in the clinic. I did also move forward to other job scopes like handling documents filing and updating lab results documents in the system. I did also learn about some common medications prescribed in clinic for common health problems. Learning about medications has made some flashbacks on my theory and I did also do some extra learning to refresh my memory. During the week 2, I was able to communicate with the patients much well as I know how the whole process works and able to guide those in need much better. I did also be a chaperon for few patients when doing physical examinations

3. Points to remember from week 2!

The first point to remember during my week 2 is that working and putting effort on certain things will definitely boost our energy as I how in my week 1, I was a bit more tired at the end of the day because things were new and lots of different information was forced in my head. But, in week 2 as I gotten used to those things, work has been more fun and I was able to make friends with my coworkers. Point two to remember is that, I need to refresh my memories on my theory that I have learned in past years that I still needed. Looking at the medications and listening to doctors taking history on patients had gave me realization that I am still lacking in many ways and there still a long way for me.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

As per my feelings, I am very motivated to learn more new thing and handle more thing solely on my own. I definitely will keep up the positive attitude and learn more so that I will be helpful to my workers. Even though my plan was to start dispensing medications to patients in week 2 but I am still happy to partly involved in it by packing the medications and pasting label on it. Overall, I do feel contented when patients thanked me for assisting them. It definitely makes my day.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

One good thing from what I did is that helping patients who are lost. As per medical students in clinical years, meeting patients will be my most daily activity, so I can definitely practice the way to talk and respond to patients later in hospital. In the clinic, sitting in front desk, is definitely a spotlight for people to ask me questions and their worries. The way I respond to them will definitely put a big impression on the clinic.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

In week 2, I had some difficulties with my work schedule. As the clinic is 24-hour clinic, the shift may vary and go up to midnight sometimes. There were days where my shift ends late at 11pm then starts morning the next day. It was not a frequents case but just in certain days. On those days, I had to pull myself out of the bed by telling myself that it will be better if I enjoy it. As I mentioned earlier, I started enjoying my work more in the second week so I get used to it and just a little laziness in mid of work as it is part of human nature.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

My plan for week 3 is to start doing more clinical assistant job like giving nebulizer to patients and doing ECG. Although I have learned these procedures in my clinical skills, there are still loopholes. I need to refresh my memory and skills so that I can confidently assist doctors and the senior clinic assistant.

Making a Blouse

1. Your name, matric number, date

Nur Amira Atiqah binti Che Shuib

A174324

31st July - 4th August 2023

2. How is your progress?

So far I am very happy with my progress. As in my study plan, I managed to make a blouse by myself. Firstly, I took my own body measurements which my supervisor, Cikgu Mie helped me a lot by explaining how to take measurements and how to add some inches in different parts of the body so that the cloth will be comfortable for the wearer. She also teaches me on drafting the top and bottom pole, which I find out needs our full concentration because if we sketched it wrongly, we will end up cutting the fabric with the wrong measurement. I also was told that with the same pole, we can actually make various types of other clothes too. Then I cut the fabrics according to the pole size which is divided by front, back, 2 pieces of sleeves and collar. Cikgu Mie checked the pieces that I’ve cut and she showed how to claim the edges of the clothes before sew it using an edge sewing machine. After that, she shows me step by step how to rejoin every piece and sew it accordingly. My other workshop mate also helped me on restoring thread on the machine and untangle the thread. On friday, I repaired some defect on my sew, i have done my blouse with the approval of my supervisor.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

One of the points to remember from this week is in order to make comfortable clothes, we have to make good poles with correct measurements. It’s actually not as easy as it looks and some parts need to adjust according to body shape and it needs full concentration. Furthermore, since the whole sewing process uses needles a lot, I have to be aware all the time and be careful to prevent any injuries from happening since I heard a lot of stories about some of my workshop-mates having injuries from needle machines and also pointing pins. Last but not least, in every project we do, we have to be patient and trust the process. There will be time that the sew is not in a straight line or we sew it out of line. And we have to detach the stitches and sew it back and repeatedly all over again until we get a perfect sew.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

I am beyond happy because I myself still do not believe that I finally made a blouse myself. And what cool is i can wear it as my top. In the making of this project, I can feel that making a cloth is not as easy as just paying at the counter. It is beyond that. I can appreciate how a tailor made perfect and comfortable clothes. Maybe previously I only knew how to buy the clothes as much as I wanted. But now, I can appreciate every detail of the clothes which were made with concentration. I also feel satisfied after the blouse is done and I feel that my hard work pays off.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

One of the good things that I did was I learned to trust the process. In anything that I am doing at that moment, which applies to all aspects, I learn to be more patient and believe that the whole difficult process will result in a good product or good result.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

First difficulty that i had encountered during this project was during selecting fabrics for this blouse. There are a lot of cotton type fabrics which are suitable for making blouses and thanks to my supervisor, she gave full guidance on how to select quality and comfortable fabrics. Furthermore, I found out I had a few troubles making a blouse pole. Some I need to repair my sketch up almost 3 times and I end up using one whole day just to make a blouse and skirt pole. It was not that easy and I take a lot to get it right or else we will give up on the first step. I am so grateful Cikgu Mie helped me a lot and gave me support for not giving up. There was also a day that I had a needle 🤬 from a pointing pin which made me realize that I need to be extra careful. Then I manage it as I learned before. Maybe it was okay here but I know that needle 🤬 injury is a serious matter in a hospital setting.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

I am planning to make a baju kurung! I purposely choose baju kurung so that i can wear it anytime, especially going to ward or during exam session.

How is your progress?
Its been great thus far, I have made progress on the floor and behind the coffee bar. I have mastered taking orders as well as custom orders. It gets quite tricky when customers order specific items and would like their food a certain way, so we'd have to understand it and convey that to the kitchen team.
I've also improved on my communication with the floor team in order to efficiently serve drinks and food.
I have also made huge progress behind the bar. I can now smoothly do all the steps to make the drinks, coffee & chocolate drinks, iced or hot. I have yet to learn how to make matcha because we have a new manual since we ordered new stock from Niko Neko.
For latte art, I am still working on it. I can do the first part of it, mixing the steamed milk with the espresso but I have yet to nail the perfect heart on the surface.

3. Points to remember from week 2!
I intend to remember that every customer who walks into the cafe wants to have a good time and that no matter what issue we're privately facing, we have to put those aside and focus on being nice and comforting in order for them to have a good time there.
I also intend to remember that the kitchen staff can get really stressed, especially on busy days with many orders rushing through. So it is important to communicate clearly, calmly and most importantly politely.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I feel proud that I am able to do something besides medical school. This has been a really refreshing thing to do aside from the medical world. Its been exciting too meeting new people who walk into the cafe. They're usually nice and it's amazing to have conversations with them. Some of them are also picky, which can sometimes test your patience but its good practice to stay calm and composed in these matters. I'm definitely excited to be learning so much about coffee considering i'm a caffeine addict myself.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
I can say for sure I'll be able to compartmentalize better now. As a doctor, you would have your own life and its own issues to deal with but we cant possibly let these issues follow us to work and let them disrupt how kind or attentive we can be to our patients. Working at a fast paced cafe has definitely given me that. Despite some private issues that I was facing, I always pushed myself to compartmentalize while I was at work so that i could continue to give the best service to these customers.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
A major concern will always be if I drop the plates or glasses I'm carrying. As we serve food or coffee, we'd have to balance them perfectly and carry as many as we can so that we reduce the trips back to the kitchen counter. Cleaning up tables also require a specific skill to stack up cups and plates and balance them back to the kitchen. I coped by taking my time to slowly adjust and work with what i can first. I plan it in my head on how to arrange or stack up the cups so that i can walk them all to the kitchen in one go.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)
I plan to master my latte art, or at least get the shape in. I also hope I remember the steps of making matcha. I do intend to work more on PR and ask for customer feedback on the food or drinks, what would they like for us to improve. I'd also like to see more synchronization in my team members and I.

Your name, matric number, date

Name: Samantha Sue Junius

Matric number: A181426

Date: 17/7/23 - 23/7/23

2. How is your progress?

During the second week of my crochet journey, I dedicated my time and effort to mastering the remaining basic crochet stitches. One crucial lesson that stood out to me during this period was the importance of gauge in crochet projects. Following gauge correctly is important as it ensures that the finished item matches the intended size and dimensions.

Towards the end of this week, I started on a crucial finishing step in any crochet project which is weaving in the loose ends of yarn. This seemingly small task can greatly impact the overall quality of a project. By mastering this skill, I ensure that my project remains intact over time.

As I reflect on the last 14 days of my crochet journey, I'm amazed at the progress I've made. From the basics of chaining and single crochet in week one to now having a firm grasp of various crochet stitches, the importance of gauge, and tidying up loose ends. This journey has not only enriched my crafting skills but has also provided me with a sense of accomplishment and creativity that I look forward to continuing to explore in the weeks and months ahead.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Gauge plays a pivotal role in the successful completion of a project. Gauge refers to the number of stitches and rows per inch or centimeter achieved when working with a particular yarn and hook size combination. One of the reasons for paying attention to gauge is to ensure that your finished crochet item matches the intended size and fit. Whether you're making a garment or any other project, achieving the correct gauge ensures that your creation will fit properly and look as expected.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

Completing the end of week two on my crochet journey has left me with a sense of accomplishment and excitement for what lies ahead. As I reflect on the past two weeks, I can't help but feel proud of how far I've come since the beginning. The satisfaction of mastering a range of crochet stitches is incredibly rewarding. Now I can find myself eagerly envisioning all the projects I can now tackle.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

One positive outcome from my crochet journey in week two that I can continue to practice is the meticulous skill of weaving in loose ends. This seemingly minor step in completing a crochet project has not only improved the overall quality of my work but has also made my projects look neat. Continuing to perfect this technique will ensure that all my future crochet projects have a polished and finished appearance.

6. Any difficulties/concerns?

1. Name, Matric number, date

Salma Wael Marzouk Abouelsoud Hashem A179287
31st July - 4th August 2023

2.How is your progress?
I am happy with my progress this week, and was really excited that a few new interns joined me under their course requirement. They are all final year FSSK (Fakulti Sains Sosial Kemanusiaan) students from various courses. I started my week with meeting Puan Wan Mazlina Jawatankuasa pendaftaran and Encik Shaiful Jawatankuasa Kenderaan to get updates on both those sectors in MAW and learned a lot on how management of student data as well as vehicles and transportation work during MAW. I also joined a meeting involving all PTj (Pusat Tanggungjawab) in UKM ranging from Jabatan Bendahari to PTM (Pusat Teknologi Maklumat) and gained a lot of insight on how a formal meeting works on a university level. The meeting was about developing an all-in-one app for UKM students for easier access to ekewangan, smpweb and other interfaces, websites and PDFs required by UKM students. The idea is under development and the meeting between all the PTjs really helped me realised how important it is to involve people from different departments too even if they are not directly involved in development of the app because hey have mportant and other perspectives that can aid in the development of the app. I even got an oppurtunity to become an Emcee for one of unit kaunselling HEP UKM collaboration with a primary school SK Kajang (a leadership camp) and gained really valuable experience on crowd and event management! Not only did I enjoy my time being a part time facilitator for the primary school kids, I also got to meet Adzrin Adzhar, a celebrity professional vocal coach and she even sang a few songs in her angelic voice!

3. Points to remember from week 2?
- MAW updates on student data management and what is the importance of students data as well as vehicles/transportation during MAW and how their route and booking works
- crowd and event management, proper protocol in conducting as well as chairing a formal meeting as well as skills to handle audiences that are younger in age.
- Moreover, I learned to be brave when giving opinions in formal meetings with the proper etiquette

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I felt really thrilled and interested with what I learned that week since all I have learned is really valuable and I also feel grateful to be able to get that golden opportunity to learn such things. Moreover I felt excited to be able to make new friends with the new interns and they definitely helped me a lot during the programs and meetings that week.

5. One good thing from what you did that you can practice now?

Good communication skills and proper etiquette either when getting to know new people or during a meeting can really help a lot and I feel that I can apply that in my life and in medical school especially in these clinical years where both of those skills are important

6. Any difficulies/concerns? How did you cope?
Nope! all went well

7. Your plan for next week (week 3)
My plan is to prepare for our very first mesyuarat Induk MAW with UKM Vice Cancellor, Prof Ts Gs Dr Ekhwan Toriman as well as Timbalan Naib Canselor Dr Suzeeren Md Jamil.
