My name, Keara (KEER-ah) Marie, was given to me at birth by my parents.
My parents wanted to give me an Irish first name, and they actually came across my name in baby book; however, the original Gaelic spelling is Ciara. My parents were afraid of people pronouncing it like "See-air-ah" (like the singer!), so they changed the spelling to Keara, hoping that the "ear" would make it easier to pronounce (well, they were wrong, and people still say my name wrong!). They also added "Marie" as a second part of my name--for Mary, because of our Catholic faith.

I did not like my name when I was young because everyone mispronounced it; I almost always had to correct my teachers and it made me very self-conscious. In fact, some of my family members still call me "Kara" to this day! However, when I was in high school, I started to embrace my name and its uniqueness. I still have to correct people all the time, but I love and appreciate that I have a different name!

My mom picked out "Kevin" as it was the last second - my dad didn't like it but time ran out. It's Irish and pronounced "Kev-in", as it's spelt. A lot of people have the name Kevin, especially family friends who are Irish, but it's not an Irish-only name anymore. My name was just a last resort, so it doesn't hold much meaning. It's common - although its popularity peaked in the 80s - meaning it's not hard to pronounce for people. There are tons of Kevins in the school, including quite a few Kevin C's, so it's rather hard to figure out who is being talked to.

My family is both Russian and Jewish, and typically Jews name their children after their deceased loved ones. My dad's mom died before I was born, so my parents wanted to name me after her. My grandmother's name was Mila pronounced "Mee-la". My parents did not want to use her name exactly because they thought it wasn't American enough, and people would mispronounce it. So they were thinking of alternatives, other names that started with the letter M. They were thinking for a while until my brother who was only 6 at the time said the name Milana, and right after he said it my parents fell in love with the name and decided to name me it. Milana is pronounced "Mee-la-na". I love my name because it is unique and not many people have it. I don't think anyone else in the school has it. There are people who have similar names such as Ilana, Alana, Milena, but not Milana. Sometimes people mispronounce my name, but for the most part my name it is easy to say for many. I think by naming me after my grandma my parents hoped that it will let her memory live on, and make me cherish her even though I've never met her. My middle name, Danielle is actually named after my great-grandmother; Dorina pronounced "Do-ree-na". She was my mom's favorite grandmother, and she was also the only Holocaust survivor in her family. I have been told many stories about my grandmothers, and I am honored to be named after such amazing women.

My name is simple yet uncommon and has roots from both sides of my family. My fathers side of the family is Portuguese and are responsible for my Italian sounding last name. My middle name, Nikiforow, is from my Russian family. Originally the name was more similar to Nikiforov but it was altered as more generations lived in America. Overall I am happy with my name and the history behind it.

I was originally supposed to be named Riley, but that was the dogs' name at the time and my parents felt as if it would be too confusing. They then chose the name Hope as they were very excited to be having another kid and my middle name is Riley. I like my name a lot because I think it's simple yet unique and not a lot of people have the name. It's also created a lot of funny nicknames and I get a lot of jokes about my name too. It's kinda fun being one of the only Hopes at school.

My parents chose my name, Andrew, simply because they liked it. My name is not very difficult to pronounce (And-Roo) and is fairly common in school. My name does not have any special meaning to me but I like it regardless because I can be called lots of different things by friends. For example, some people call me Drew or Andy but I usually go with Andrew.
