This theory defines language as an essential and inseparable component of human nature. By viewing language as a critical part of human action further connects all social, physical, symbolic of life. Language in this perspective is seen as a way of expression that is constantly growing and evolving. One of the concepts discussed within the article, Language and the Common Core State Standards is that language is viewed without boarders. In schools, language is taught with its own systems and rules however when one observes how a variety of different languages are taught such as Mandarin, Arabic, Hakka, and English they all have the same underlining characteristics of being an especial function of the human body, emotion, and expression. Language is more than just words that come out of ones mouth but a form of action in which people are able to make decision, draw connections, create an identity, and change. The text describes the idea that "language is not a fixed, ready-made code, but a process that is always changing and develop" which is critical to understanding this theory and how it impacts us all today. (Van Lier, 2012)

Teaching ELs through the Language is Action theory is seen through engaging students through meaningful activities that encourage interaction, research, discussion, and highly involved learning. The basis of this learning is to combine creativity with cognitive and linguistic work. This is an extremely valuable way of teaching because it allows students to draw connections to course work while making decisions and adding their own creativity to projects and assignments along the way. As a teacher using this learning style, it is critical students feel comfortable and open to sharing and interacting with other students. This must involve a strong foundation of social justice framework as well as classroom boundaries to ensure all behavior is respectful. If done properly, this learning style allows to students to learn very effectively by constantly making connections with other people using critical thinking.

Giving students the ability to draw connections to the real world and their life experience will allow them to grasp the concepts more effectively and remember topics for the long run. The article describes this connection to the real world as a way to get EL students to engage their interests and personal connections to create growth through this perception. As language in this context is described as a way to education others through feelings and gestures, it allows students to create this environment for themselves and other students. Language is more than just the words one learns but the way they act it out in the lives and how they interact with others in the process. As Aida Walqui mentioned in her interview, "teachers need to develop a new awareness of language" in order for ELs to be able to embody all characteristics of language.
