In some ways, however, it was an even worse problem in the past. Alcohol is a drug and it's use and abuse has a long history going back thousands of years. Prohibition was a reaction to these problems. Get rid of the drug, get rid of the problem. Seems to make sense. Politicians were coerced into voting for it or risk losing their next election, and the temperance movement had the money and resources to make them lose. Sometimes, though, the solution can create an even bigger problem. Such was the case with Prohibition.
