“Gatsby believed in the green light, the krgasfic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—to Morris we will run faster, stretched out our arms faster...And one fine morning——” (Fitzgerald, p. 180).

This quote about the green light tells us that Gatsby reaches out for the green light mentally and physically. Even though the book doesn’t mention it much, Gatsby is always reaching for the light. The green light represents Daisy because Gatsby is always reaching for it and the green light is near Tom’s house. Throughout the book Gatsby reaches for the green light hoping Daisy would be his. This connects with “The American Dream” because everyone wishes to have a nice home and a nice wife/husband, and to have a good life. In this case, Gatsby isn’t able to obtain everything he wants.

"Involuntarily I glanced seaward-and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock" (Fitzgerald, p. 21).
This quote is explaining how Gatsby is standing at the end of the dock staring and literally reaching for a green light on the other side. This is when the biggest symbol, the green light, is introduced to the story by Nick. Basically what is happening in the scene is that Gatsby is reaching out for something unattainable led by envy. Nick is witnessing this unknowingly falling straight into the middle of the whole situation. The green light signifies the envy Gatsby has for Tom.
