To gain a better understanding of how stress impacts academic performance in student athletes and vice versa

Purpose Statement: As of right now, there is a problem with high schools understanding, or lack thereof, that surrounds the relationship between stress and academic performacs within high school student athletes. Around 60% of all high school student-athletes produce low academic performance due to stress, and yet, it seems that high school student-athletes are hihgly ignored in terms how severly they may be affect by stress. This problem has negatively impacted high school student-athletes because they are overwhlemed with too much. A possible cause of this problem is thuer attempt to balance their sport, school work, and home/social life all in onve. Perhaps a study that investigates all the factors that contribute to the sitituation can help rememdy the lack of understanding regarding how heavily high school student athletes are impacted by stress academically.

The Effects of Stress on Uscaa Student-Athlete Academics and Sport Enjoyment. College Student Journal, 55(4), 429–439.

Brief Description (Abstract from part of the article)--> "The current study investigated the relationship between stress and academic performance among United States Collegiate Athletic Association student-athletes and their non-athlete peers. A total of 96 students (48 student-athletes and 48 non-athletes) received a survey measuring stress and academic engagement; student athletes received an additional instrument measuring enjoyment of sport. As predicted, student-athletes scored significantly lower on GPA and those who scored higher on stress scored lower on sport enjoyment. However, student-athletes reported significantly lower stress-levels than their non-athlete peers. Regression analyses found that sport enjoyment did not moderate the relationship between stress and GPA. Overall, student-athletes differed enough from traditional students to suggest that they may be a unique population, and that findings from NCAA student-athletes may generalize to lower-tiered collegiate athletes, but more research involving direct comparisons may be needed."
