Driving is a complex activity that requires certain skills and abilities necessary in driving safely on any road whether it’s a busy highway or one packed with traffic. Medically fit drives are able to perceive all the things in their environment through their cognitive abilities as well as visual and auditory senses. The need for safe driving explains why the Australian law requires all drivers to be of good mental and physical health when operating on the roads; this rule applies for both private and commercial drivers. Every driver has to undergo a medical driving assessment before being allowed on the road. This evaluation is not for new drivers alone; drivers seeking to renew their license have to take the test. It is natural for new drivers to experience anxiety before taking their first medical driving assessment. Additionally, there are costs involved because the medical practitioner undertaking the test has to charge for the hours spent.

While taking the medical driving evaluation, there is no need to panic especially if you are in good health. However, there are conditions that can disqualify you from driving. Moreover, an issued license can be revoked or transformed into the short-term format if you develop serious medical conditions after the assessment. A medical steering assessment is completed once the physician checks the following things.

•	Visual acuity: The physician ensures that you have the ability to see adequately and clearly out of each eye independently. If you had an accident that led to total vision loss of one eye, you may still be allowed to drive. What matters in the eyesight checkup is the ability to see clearly without experiencing double or blurred vision.

•	Mental health: All drivers must be of god or rather stable mental health before being allowed on the road. To ascertain this fact, the physician will seek answers concerning the existence of any mental issue such as dementia, depression and other psychiatric issues. It is also best to inform the physician of any sleep disorders.

•	Neurological impairment: Any neurological issue has serious implications on driving abilities. The common issues that doctors are concerned about include stroke, seizures and epilepsy among others. For your safety and that of other drivers, it is important to honestly respond to certain questions such as prior head surgeries.

•	Substance misuse: It is prohibited to drive under the influence of alcohol and other drugs because of the risk it poses to other drivers and innocent pedestrians. The doctor checks for traces of substances in the blood system. It is nearly impossible for alcohol and other drug addicts to pass the medical driving exam particularly if they are applying for a Heavy Goods Vehicle license.

•	Severe medical conditions: These include diabetes and unmanageable heart conditions. For instance, a driver who cannot manage their diabetic condition may raise questions on their fitness to drive. Moreover, certain heart conditions such as aneurysms and heart murmurs are disastrous if not well-managed.

Summary

It may seem that the medical driving test requires drivers to be of perfect health but that is not the case. What matters is honesty in disclosing the existence of certain medical conditions and whether you are able to manage them.
