The "Cultural Revolution" was a movement that worked to establish TRUE equality between workers, peasants, and those better off in life. People who did work with their bare hands were to be praised. (Intellectuals and artistic thinkers were a huge threat during this time) Because of this the government shut down all colleges and schools where arts and intellect are appreciated. Those who seemed to be "privileged" or were smarter than the rest were exiled and had to "purify themselves" by doing manual labor. Many were executed or died in jail during this period.
