         <description><![CDATA[<div>Dorothea Dix was an activist for the mentally handicap. She worked towards improving the way the mentally handicap were treated. Dix was extremely successful in changing the way people looked at and treated  the mentally ill; 15 states would open new hospitals and asylums because of her work.</div>]]></description>

A renewed value in salvation by good works and following the teachings of God inspired many to shift the goal of prisons from punishment to rehabilitation. In addition, children were moved to juvenile detention centers, and most states stopped putting debtors in prison.</div>]]></description>
