Router-on-a-stick is a term frequently used to describe a setup up that consists of a router and switch connected using one Ethernet link configured as an 802.1q trunk link. In this setup, the switch is configured with multiple VLANs and the router performs all routing between the different networks/VLANs.

Why should I use Router on a Stick?

For inter-VLAN routing it means the forwarding of packets between hosts belonging to different VLANs, and therefore belonging to separate networks that require a router to communicate with each other. The concept is that in order to communicate distinct VLANs, all must have a reference gateway that allows routing: in essence must be of the router interface for each VLAN.

To work around the obvious problem of having as many physical interfaces are the VLAN to be put into communication, you use sub-interfaces, or sub-virtual interfaces of physical interfaces.
