In the video, "Units of Study for Reading: Structures of Reading Workshop" the speaker discusses how simple and predictable the workshop model is. The model is set, because it is used to support the complexity of the work that is occurring during it. This structured model provides the teacher with a focus and allows the students not to have to guess as to what they will be learning during that lesson.

In the Heinemann webinar, the speaker introduces the workshop framework. I think it is a very smart idea to explain the structure of reading workshop to the students before you begin. It seems if you stick with the simple and predictable nature of workshop it will provide the teacher with more instructional time with his/her students. So, less time spent on giving directions and more time spent reading and collaborating.

Lucy Calkins lays out the basic framework for reader's workshop. The teacher brings the class together when presenting a mini lesson which creates a focus that students may practice during their reading time. Students are then given time for their independent practice. This is a time where students can practice the day's mini lesson as well as previous strategies that were taught. During this time, teachers can conference with individual students or with groups. In addition, students should be given opportunities to share their work with others. Calkins recommended a mid workshop check in to highlight some of the work that was accomplished or share a student's work. During reader's workshop, it is crucial that students are given the time to read and practice the skills and strategies learned.

In the video, Units of Study for Reading: Structures of Reading workshop, Lucy Calkins discussed how important it is to start with a mini lesson so the students have a focus for their reading. Then the students can then go and work on their own reading to help with individual goals. The students can help with these goals by working with partners or small groups. The teacher can then work with the small groups to guide them to maximize learning.

The speaker in this portion of the webinar explains how it is important that students are aware of their role in the reader's workshop model and how the teacher is there to help them. She emphasizes that teachers need to explain to students that the workshop model is a place where they can practice the skills and strategies just like they would during sports practice. Additionally, students should look for support and be supportive of their peers during this process.

When teaching first grade I an identical approach to introducing workshop (the circle cut into sections). What I like is how the language is more sophisticated (self regulation, collaboration, self discipline). The mini lessons stay shorter when students understand the importance of the routine. First, I demonstrate, you watch, then you practice with me and then on your own. At the end we will talk about the great thinking that is happening.

Lucy reinforces the idea of keeping our workshop simple and predictable, where teacher demonstrates, students try with guidance and then students work independently to practice skills in self chosen texts. It is important that students have time to read extensively.
