         <description><![CDATA[<p>Andreas Vesalius, an anatomist during the 16th century, provided one of the earliest descriptions of hydrocephalus. This artifact, the De Humani Corporis Fabrica, accurately represented human anatomy and other conditions such as hydrocephalus. </p><p><br></p><p>Andreas Versalius studied in Europe, specifically Belgium and Italy, and his work including De Humani Corporis Fabrica, was published in Europe as well. This text was published in 1543, during the Renaissance, when scientific and artistic advancements were on the rise. Vesalius's work was significant because it challenged the unprecedented anatomical misconceptions. </p><p><br></p><p>De Humani Corporis Fabrica provided a more accurate description of human anatomy than previous ancient medical texts and influenced the study of neurological disorders.          <description><![CDATA[<p>Thomas Willis, and his work of the <em>Cerebri Anatome, </em>is an influential text that studies the brain's anatomy and the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid. This work helps explain how the build-up of CSF contributes to neurological conditions like hydrocephalus.</p><p><br/></p><p><em>Cerebri Anatome </em>was published in 1664 during the Scientific Revolution. Willis studied in England at Oxford University, where this work was written and published. </p><p><br/></p><p>Willis' work on CSF helped explain how excessive fluid can accumulate in the brain and is important in the study of hydrocephalus.          <description><![CDATA[<p>This artifact, De Sedibus et Causis Morborum, a text by Giovanni Battista Morgangi included autopsy findings that detailed descriptions of hydrocephalus. This work made Morgangi to be known as one of the founders of pathological anatomy.</p><p><br></p><p>Giovanni Battista Morgangi conducted his autopsies and research in Italy where the De Sedibus et Causis Morborum was published in 1761. This was during the Enlightenment period when the scientific study of anatomy was prominent. </p><p><br></p><p>Morgangi's work was important in the history of neuroscience because it was one of the first links to specific anatomical changes with clinical manifestations like hydrocephalus.          <description><![CDATA[<p>This set of surgical cannulas developed by Benjamin Bell was used to perform external drainage procedures for patients with hydrocephalus. </p><p><br/></p><p>Benjamin Bell, a Scottish surgeon who practiced in Edinburgh  created this set of tools during the late part of the Enlightenment period. These tools date back to the 1770s during a time when surgery was starting to evolve. </p><p><br/></p><p>Bell's work was important because it shows one of the first attempts to surgically treat hydrocephalus by drawing the excess CSF.          <description><![CDATA[<p>This artifact is a preserved human skull of a hydrocephalus patient. This skull shows enlarged ventricles and cranial deformation. </p><p><br/></p><p>This artifact is from the 1790s when medical museums began to showcase specimens for scientific study. It is possible that artifacts like this were displayed in museums in Europe. </p><p><br/></p><p>This skull is important because it provides early evidence of the physical manifestations of hydrocephalus.          <description><![CDATA[<p>A modern programmable shunt is a medical device used to treat hydrocephalus by regulating cerebrospinal fluid. This shunt allows doctors to modify drainage settings in a non-invasive way. </p><p><br/></p><p>This programmable shunt has improved hydrocephalus management and allowed patients more individual treatments. This device has reduced the risk of over and under-drainage and represents a major innovation in neurosurgery. </p><p><br/></p><p>This programmable shunt demonstrates an advancement that was built upon history.          <description><![CDATA[<p>Walter Dandy will be a good docent for this exhibit because as a neurosurgeon he was a crucial figure in understanding hydrocephalus. He was a pioneer in CSF discoveries and developing surgical techniques for treating hydrocephalus.</p><p><br/></p><p>Dandy's research helped bridge the gap in historical discoveries and without his contributions, modern-day treatments wouldn’t be possible.
