Are they working together? Yes. Do they have shared responsability? No. Are they making substantive decisions ? No. Is their work interdependent? No.
2nd activity: discussing about different resolutions for a math problem:
Are they working together? Yes. Do they have shared responsability? Yes.  Are they making substantive decisions ? Yes. Is their work interdependent? Yes.
I can see in the second activity an engagement among the students since they have do express their ideas as well as to listen to others ideas. They both share the responsability of coming to a resolution together and for that they have to make decisions about what can be useful to solve the problem and what is not. So the product of their work comes from an interdependent serie of tasks in which the students are engaged with their work and with each other.
