The proper managing of the burial ceremony has always been a matter of great importance to the Chinese. The soul of a person was believed to leave the body at death, in order to take its place in the spirit world. The parting of the body and soul was felt to cause some fear and confusion to the new spirit, so the surviving members of the family tried to provide it with all the support it needed. If they were able to ease its passage into the next world, they believed, the dead person would not turn into an evil spirit that would return to make trouble for the living.

The best preserved mummy in the World was found in China in 1971. The mummy preserved was a woman called Xin Zhui and had been married to a wealthy Han ruler. She died from a heart attack around 2200 years ago at around the age of 50. When the mummy was found, her skin was soft, her hair was completely intact, her limbs were flexible and her blood in her veins was still red. Xin's body had been wrapped in many layers of silk after being dipped in a liquid that still puzzles scientists to this day. Her tomb was very well constructed and protected. The tomb contained around 1000 items.

Ancient Chinese Coffins weren't like coffins we see today. Ancient Chinese Coffins were actually suits made of jade or bronze. Members of the Han Family Dynasty were buried in jade suits rather than bronze. The Suits are quite large and are normally square or have a rectangular shape. Jade suits where expensive where as bronze were not at expensive. They Looked like armour and sometimes had little pillows with them. The armour wasn't armour but a burial robe.

In Buddhist Northern Chinese beliefs, everyone’s soul had two parts, the po (the yin soul, made of earth) and the hun (the yang soul, made of qi.) Both souls needed support to live, and when the souls died, they went to different places, with the hun going to heaven in earliest ideas, and the po staying with the body or going to the underworld

The ancient Chinese believed that the tomb where the dead body was buried became the place where the spirit of the dead person resided. People were buried with a range of items they might need in the afterlife, such as food, clothing, and weapons. But more important people would have more elaborate tomb. In their tomb would be fancy furniture and maybe even chariots and they would more than likely be buried with their family.
